Quite right except they did know I had private plates as I took the car in to make the booking and change the plate on the OPC system, I don't object to the requirement for legal plates but on Friday I had the same problem on my Range Rover and Stratstone fitted new plates and put the old ones in the boot without asking for any info from me.

The good news is they are doing the main baring oil seal and replacing the water pump under warranty which I am told would have cost around £1500.00, not sure it needs it but would be rood to say no.[

As pointed out the test centres are under pressure to monitor incorrectly spaced plates, the 'hot topic' at the moment unfortunately for yourself.

I took my car for an MOT today 57 miles each way.
My car failed on my private plate spacing of 4 MSB instead of 4MSB, I asked them to fit new plates but they will not without a utility bill/formal id and log sheet for car.
I now have to drive back again tomorrow with paperwork for them to make plates which I will then remove which they tell me happens all the time, so why don't they tell you to bring the paperwork when booking an MOT?
They also told me that my car has a DAMP main bearing seal and DAMP water pump but this is covered by the Porsche used car warranty so although I think they are wrong and just looking for work I feel I have to let them do it for free.

I think you're being a little hard on the dealer. He wasn't to know your car had illegal number plates unless you had previously provided him with a photo and there are very strict penalties nowadays for supplying number plates without first obtaining the correct paperwork.

When making the plates I believe they have to fill in forms stating the proof of ID supplied.

OPC told me it happens all the time so why don't they say when booking an MOT if you have PP bring id and V5 it would save them and there customers a lot of hassle.
I mite add they also tried to say I would have to pay for a re test today which they reluctantly backed down on.
I had mine relaced at my recent service - no hassle at all. Surely had you been a customer of theirs then there should be no need for additional ID, especially, as I expect, that you wouild be paying by credit card.
If its not too far use Bolton OPC. They have been excellent with me every time.
Indeed - although I've recently got a new set of plates made by a firm on the internet and they asked for no ID. Although I guess they have my credit card number. But no request for V5 etc and no evidence that I have anything to do with the car.
I think it's another case of ID hassle for the 99.999% of the law abiding public without actually putting any real barrier in the way of the criminals. Just makes some of the public think the govt must be trying.

In the last 2 weeks I have had 3 cars MOT'd all with private plates and all three garages reacted differently to the spacing.
Garage 1: No problem
Garage 2: Fitted new plates at my cost and issued MOT
Garage 3: OPC Retest on presentation of my id/utility bill and log sheet.
And yes I am known by Garage 2 and 3.
