But the change quality is superb on those (mine was on a BMW E92 though not a 996/997).

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Can i please ask for some opinions on the best short shifter for a 2000 996 ,there are quiet a few on the market and they do vary in price .

POST 2Original post

I bought mine from Alex from the this site and I found him to be very informative ( the price is reasonable ) the quality is excellent and I am very happy with my purchase . It made a real difference

POST 3Original post

I use the one from Alex on three of my 996s Fitting details here. MC

POST 4Original post

I think there are 2 valid options: 1. Buy a Chinese kit modified by Alex 2. Buy a 997 GT3 shift Fairly similar in cost, the Chinese/Alex kit is very short, the 997 shift has a longer throw, about and inch shorter than the std 996 shift.

POST 5Original post

Just be aware that if you do go with the GT3 997.2 shifter, buy from the dealer. £330 including vat from a dealer, nearly all resellers are asking £500+.

POST 6Original post

The 'best' SSK is very subjective. Lots of threads on this. Personally I have the 997 GT3 shifter and I'm very happy with it. There's other Porsche options, third party and Alex's kit. Also a number of ebay options. There's also other ways to change feel of gear change, eg cables and engine mounts. Lots to play with

POST 7Original post

I'm not sure if Alex has put his prices up, but when I bought mine several years ago it was nowhere near the prices mentioned above for the GT3 item. Shifter feel, & throw preferences will be subjective, so if possible I'd suggest you try & find someone nearby with one you can try. Personally I love the shorter throw of my "Alex" shifter. However I think MAldren's modified (by Alex) 997 unit is perhaps the best "feeling" one I've tried. As I recall, his had an almost perfect proverbial "rifle bolt" action, it's just the throw was a little too long for my preference. I've not had time to add Alex's updated sleeve for the ball-end yet, but I hear this should remove the small amount of sideways play which these can suffer from. For the cost, I think a short shift with a 997 knob is one of the best mod's you can do on these. If you're on a tighter budget, then I vaguely recall someone (JamesX19?) had posted a tip on how to upgrade the cheap ebay units with some brass fittings, but I'm pretty sure he eventually replaced it with one of Alex's.

POST 8Original post

It still isn't anywhere near and now only a tenner more due to including the precision machined side block.

POST 9Original post

Don't the GT gearboxes have the short throw on the gearbox itself? My throw is too short and I need to lengthen it. Problem being the combination of SSK and GT box.

POST 10Original post

A kit on ebay for £20 or nearest offer, Alex could then improve the bushes for you?!

POST 11Original post

I've got an Alex / eBay SSK kit with the new side block bearing too. And IMO it has a better feel than the standard 997 GT3 shift and with less play side to side and longitudinally. In terms of value then, it blows the GT3 shift out of the water totally. The throw length in the car is perfect for me and the position etc I sit in. Mine is a 997, although I don't imagine the positioning is much different between the two cars. I think the only better option might be a CAE shifter, as they are adjustable for throw. Although they do have a much longer lever than the other options, something I couldn't live with personally on a 997. But the change quality is superb on those (mine was on a BMW E92 though not a 996/997). The CAE is very expensive though!
