Suggestion

Even when using a high strength detergent , or even using a pure solvent like mineral spirits or brake clean there will still be a film surface in the reservoir for a few weeks..

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

9 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I don't seem to be losing any oil. No intermix showing in the oil side. The engine was recently gone through. New water pump, head replaced due to a crack and oil in the cooling system. The system has been flushed but it would be assumed there would be residue. How much residue should I be expecting? I continue to drive the car, get it hot, then let it sit. When it's cool, I open it and skim the residue out of the tank.

POST 2Original post

This is normal .... After having an intermix you will have the oily mess clinging to the walls of both radiators the heater core and 23 hoses plus the metal pipes running the length of the car.. Even when using a high strength detergent , or even using a pure solvent like mineral spirits or brake clean there will still be a film surface in the reservoir for a few weeks.. JUst keep skimming the oil for the top surface or soaking it up with absorbent cloth/towels until it is no longer coming to the surface....

Thats kinda what i was thinking. What time frame would you think it will take to calm down? Have about 1k miles on it.

POST 4Original post

Quotes source post: 20009073

That will depend on how thoroughly you tried to clean the cooling system after the repair...... With 1000 miles the film thickness should be getting noticeably less......

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 20009091

you know oil.. a little goes a long ways. It's hard to judge. Seems darker than the new oil in the car though.

POST 6Original post

Quotes source post: 20009109

Dark oil is a good sign it is just the residue from the intemix that hasn't yet been clean out .....

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 20009259

riddle me this. Every post I see about intermix shows a clear emulsion between the oil and coolant. Typical of what you'd see in major failure and similar to a chocolate milk color. My oil is sitting cleanly on top of the coolant. Not mixed. Clearly dark and separate. This seems weird to me.

POST 8Original post

Quotes source post: 20010082

that's easy,,, oil is lighter than coolant and wants to rise to the top, and if left alone that is what it is doing and the reservoir is the highest point... But if the oil is "injected" into the coolant from a cracked head it will go through the water pump every 3-5 seconds like blender and become a milk shake ..

Well, thats where my head was at with it but i wanted some validation.
