Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.
35 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

Am thinking of selling my 997 RS.2 and have seen all sorts of concerns re over revs, do had a report run by my dealer when it was serviced. ( Car is a 2010 with 7,000 miles and is perfect.). I had once done the dreaded 5th to 2nd downshift at the Nurburgring, but I caught it immediately and was curious if it would show up. Apologies if this has all been covered in the past.
Anyway the report is below. My questions are:
(1) What does each range 1 through 6 mean in RPM?..I do not redline my cars ever, but certainly run up to 7000 often.
(2) Number of ignitions at speed^maximum speed range 1 reads 20...not sure what that is.
Report shows nothing beyond range 1 so no over revs, but was curious to know how you could reach (say) range 6 unless missing a downshift.....
1 my understanding is as follows:
1 7300-7500
2 7500-7700
3 7700-7900
4 7900-8400
5 8400-9500
6 9500-11000
2. 500 ignitions is about 1 second in RR1, so 20 is a fraction of a second. All very good.
Rev ranges - 997 GT3:
Create the VAL before deleting the fault memory. Overspeed events are documented as follows in the VAL:
Rev range 1: 8,400 -1 ... to 9,200 -1
⇒ Maximum permitted engine speed exceeded; engine damage possible.
Rev range 2: 9,200 -1 ... to 9,400 -1
⇒ Maximum permitted engine speed exceeded; engine damage possible.
Rev range 3: 9,400 -1 ... to 9,600 -1
⇒ Maximum permitted engine speed exceeded; engine damage possible.
Rev range 4: 9,600 -1 ... to 10,000 -1
⇒ Maximum permitted engine speed clearly exceeded; engine damage probable.
Rev range 5: 10,000 -1 ... to 11,000 -1
⇒ Maximum permitted engine speed very clearly exceeded; engine damage very probable.
Rev range 6: over 11,000 -1
⇒ Engine damage has generally occurred.

What do the "Operating Hours Counter Reading at overspeed range 1 / 2 / 3! mean?
An approximation of when it occurred.
It's actually only the time the most recent event occurred. I.e. the car could have gone into that rev range a number of times, creating the total number of ignitions shown (3 per revolution of the engine by the way), the time counter just shows the most recent time it happened.
For example, if you had 10,000 range 1 ignitions, the last being 100 hours ago, you could go out and redline the car to the limiter for a second or so and when you read it again you'll see 10,500 range 1 ignitions and the time counter at a fraction of an hour below the current reading for the car's total hours from new.

Does hitting the rev limiter record a rev range 1 on a 997?

No. The rev limit is below range 1.
Al's table (posted above) is incorrect. The other table posted is obviously not a GT3. My table is not the 997.2 - but unless the rev limit is different then it probably isn't any different.

No. The rev limit is below range 1.
That is helpful . I am trying to understand the very first line of the report I posted above . My dealer says all is very good; however, if you look at the first line it seems to show 20 instances opposite range 1, and I just can't imagine I would have redlined it like that. Likely I just do not understand the report.
Fair enough, but what I was trying to explain still stands. EFA:

That's 20 ignitions, not 20 times. Literally a small fraction of a second, and possibly (maybe probably) only one instance.

Perfect, and matches my recollection. Many thanks. I missed downshift which I caught immediately as it was going in.....long time ago.

RDMcG. If I was you I would not cash out just yet. With the current 991 GT3 debacle I reckon 7.2RS prices are only going one way.
In no great hurry as it happens, and am not much of an expert on car investment. I have an attachment to my older RS.1 which I will keep, and then have the 991RS as a contrast in the future . Still, wanted to be very honest with any buyer so that there is nothing hidden.

Your screenshot / report shows that your car has the following:
X operating hours on the engine
20 over-rev ignitions (i.e. a fraction of a second over 9000rpm).
The last over-rev event was at 147 operating hours.

Many thanks, and of course, I was the guilty party!..caught it in a flash, and have had zero problems. People are sometimes paranoid about this stuff, so best to be straightforward. Nothing serious.
Ooh let's play guess the operating hours!
I say 184 hours.
That must be one of the most carefully driven GT3s! I don't mean slow, I just mean that the lower ranges are usually in the thousands, especially given the nature and use of GT3s.
That's a credit to you RDMCG.

Been travelling a lot and tend to use my RS.1 more funnily enough. Yep, it was only tracked at the Nurburgring, and generally I do not thrash cars that much. Definitely over serviced too...three oil and fluid changes, full service before storage, clear bra so not a stone chip out of it.Tough on tires though, just fitted third set of PS Cups the other day. Can't keep all cars, and definitely getting 991RS, so not much point in hanging to to everything. Can't bring myself to sell my older viper green 2008 RS.1 so decided to set this one free.

Forgive my ignorance but are you saying that this read out can tell how many hours the car was operational / ignition on / in gear and moving? How does that work and what benefit would that have?

The VAL report tells you the operating hours for the car. You can then work out the average speed (mileage/hours) to corroborate the mileage to some extent and to see if it's been a track slag or garage queen.
Yep, as above.
I took a stab at average speed for a road GT3 (with some track use) as say 38mph. His mileage is 7000 so divide that by the 38 gives you 184 operating hours.
Of course that will be higher or lower depending on the actual average speed.
It can be used as a guide as Alpine says but you'll of course never know if a car has sat on the motorway a lot or if it's been lapping Oulton Park all of its life. We are talking GT3s though so the latter is what they were made for.

Amazingly, my average over my 3 cars is 39!! I'm going for 40.
My ave is 32 most peoples is about 30 and I don't hang about either.
Even when I was a field eng doing 40k motorway miles ave was still only 30.
Just interesting in the total op hours of the ops car vs his over rev hours
Not that it bothers me but you just have to be contrary to everyone else don't you?
If we all like a black car you like a red car. If we average high 30s you average low 30s.
When I was commuting 6 miles each way to work through 30 and 50 mph zones I averaged mid to high 20s. Now I live more rurally I average in the 30s no problem. Even my wife's focus averages in the 30s and she's a non petrol head, law abiding school teacher. (Not that I'm not law abiding.)
So if you don't hang about your mph is going somewhere.
What's your fascination with the rev range time compared to operating hours? If they were range 5 or 6 it may matter. They are range 1, so irrelevant.
ETA - That's the last I'll write too as I don't want to derail the OPs topic.

It goes into stopping at lights, junctions, parking etc etc,
I would love to see your total hours and miles on your car, but I doubt that will happen.
My operating hours? It was the OP's you were asking about last night.
What is your fascination with how long other peoples engines have been running for?
Next you'll be asking what I'm wearing.
I shouldn't give you the benefit of a bite. I usually just ignore your posts altogether which is what a few of us on here agreed to do a while ago. As has been said before you are possibly an alright bloke in person, but you just like to rub people up the wrong way on here and constantly argue black is white, especially where GT3s are concerned.
No hard feelings though.
PS I know what "average" mph means and how it is calculated.

"which is what a few of us on here agreed to do a while ago"
lol never happen :-)
"constantly argue black is white"
No I post up facts and back up what I say with facts, most people post bulls
t and back down when I ask for hard facts :-)
time and time again instead of showing or proving the claims I get abuse because we all know people cannot back up the bulls
t we read here :-)
my Spyder ave 27 mph vs running hours, I think most people think the total ave should be a lot higher than it is,
hence why I think you are just guessing yours esp the Focus.
my Spyder was a press car also, so would you say it's had a hard life or would you go on the ave 27mph speed over all and say its had a easy life ?
run to run yes you can ave 60mph but a dme total running hours read out, some might be shocked how low the ave mph are.
never any hard feeling by me, just like people to back up their claims, its that simple :-)

Well..sorry I can't answer any questions about the operating hours..( evidently my original post was to try to understand the DME report). Many thanks to those who clarified it for me. The car has been to a degree a spare car, and had about half of its mileage in its first three weeks in Germany. After my customary few days at the Ring it was not tracked after that. Just too many other things to do.
Interestingly my RS.1 had had a lot more tracking and has 18,000 miles on it. I must run a DME report on that one too, though I am sure it will not have much in the way of over revs.

Maybe the mileage has been wound back on yours
