Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.
415 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

stefan, that plate belongs to one of our local PCA members and I've still not figured out who owns it yet.
I am trying to decide on a new license plate for my 911 and the one I like best so far is IX XI stands in roman numerals for 9 11. What do you guys think? What are some cool Porsche plates which you guys have seen?
Something to think about....I remember one list of top 10 dont's with your 911...one of them was having a personalized license plate that was cool and easy to remember for those you fly by on the freeway that call you in to the local police....and I think they were speaking from experience.
I thought long and hard about this very issue before I got my plate.
In the end I figured that my car was unique enough within this area and that I'd be driving by so fast that it really didn't matter.
My friends were amazed that I considered a personalized plate as a speeding deterrent.
BTW, Schnell was one of my choices that was already taken.
I am also thinking of getting a new plate:
2FAST4U
DONOK
CRE8TV
PRFECTM8
NEVRL8
MYPRSCH
Just made up the last three.
I also made up the 1st one, but someone already had it.
One of my admins has WTF. Apparently the folks at MN's DMV don't spend much time on the internet. I suppose that's a good thing.
My favorite was in Portland in the 80s. There was a very attractive woman I would see in a 911 with the plate IMKEPT. I never met her but was told she was a successful trader and got the plate as a joke.
The plate on my first 996 was DGE 911. I must have been asked 100 times what it meant. The truth was is meant nothing. It was just the plate they gave me. I'm really not a personalized plate kind of guy.
I generally try to get things that are 1. not going to offend in any way 2. not obvious without some thought and 3. humorous. I figure the only people who read them are close enough to wish you weren't in their way anymore
Here's a link with a bunch of Porsche vanity plates listed:
Vanity Plate Ideas
Some of my favorites:
MLBU VW
NRVOUS
NOTIC8S
CRIMPAYS
In a twist of fate, when I ordered the plate for my 911, I decided not to get it personalized as I was paying extra already for a Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation tag (has to be 4 characters) and they sent me 1811.
I read a story a couple of years ago about a guy that had this plate - he ended up getting every ticket in the system that did not have a plate. He wasn't amused.
True Story.
I moved from a boxster to the 911 2 years ago when I got married and was going to give the box to my new wife (we sold two houses to combine into one, so had enough wiggle room to keep both cars and a very p-car supportive wife)
Here is the strange part.
Her name is Karna (unusual name, right?) went to the MN DMV and someone already had the tag. We couldn't believe it, and my wife had never met another Karna...about three months later we were running to the mall and a blue boxster slides by us - rear plate reads KARNA - we both started laughing and got her attention at the next light. End up talking about the names, cars etc...then she says she is a realtor in the area...wife is also a realtor!
Sorry for the long story, but I have tell the story when people bring up plates.
There are so many folks here from Minnesota. I live in Minneapolis, who else is here from Minnesota and shall we get together for a drink???? Let's organize a nice cruize this Sunday since it's cold and perfect driving weather.
A note to everyone, bunch of people with some really nice cars (including my self) meet at the Maserati dealership to watch the Formula 1 races at the exact time of broadcast on Speed TV and everyone is welcome!!!!!!!!! (Of course, When the season starts again)
NY State DMV has a site to inquire availability of vanity plates. I have been entering various options.
Recently tried all possible versions of "Whoooosh" (8 letter max). This morning I saw a new Vette with "Whoosh" on it. If it were the lottery it would have definitely been in the NYC area.
XZILER8 is available but not XLR8 which I would have jumped on.
In NC, and it may be the same in other states, if there is a symbol, it does not count as a letter.
My registration reads PORCHA (PORCHE was taken)
On the tag it reads POR$CHA
Tim,
When you head this way look me up
Back to the plates - there is a 996 fully tricked out by Ruf: forced induction, body kit, suspension, etc etc. The whole kit and kaboodle.
Plate reads: NVRENUF
Soooo sweet!

Big D! Just east of downtown. We don't make it to San Antonio very often. BTW, did you hear that a whole boat of people on the river walk were showered with old pee? Someone raided a port-a-potty and was tossing it off a bridge. The whole boat had to be decontaminated. Doh!

Hmmm?
I'm Austrian so I should have some basic knowledge about German but I've never heard "ninety one one". Doesn't even make sense to me; it's 90 1 1 and not 911; in German you usually hear "Neunelfer" so putting the last two letters behind the number would make sense.
Back in the late 90's I saw a speed yellow 993 twin turbo while sitting in traffic. It was just screaming speed, lowered, some sort of bad *** wheels the whole nine yards..
Plate read:
STIL L8
On my first 911 (78 SC) I had CAHL 911 -- dual meaning since I was a BioMedial Engineer working in hospitals at the time.
No don't do the obvious...it is obvious it is a Porsche ain't it
I am one that laughs at license plates or license plate frames that say the name of the car when there is a badge on the car itself already...it's redundant IMHO
BUKAKE? Over my head I guess.
I saw ESSESS on a Mustang yesterday...very creative.
My current plate reads OHIO ST8 (yes...I know we lost last week. Muck Fichigan).

2 B
and
NOT 2 B.
2 B
is one of the first British plates from the early 1900's, while
NOT 2 B
is from the early sixties. Tricky to get one, very tricky to get both. Pair worth at least $200,000.
I hope this isn't a Justin Timberlake reference. Definitely not cool.
I saw an old BMW convertible when I was a kid...it was lowered on rims (VERY uncommon at the time).
It read:
YBJLUS = Why be jealous?
the guy looked like a dick.
Some d-bag I've seen around town has "Cuda911." Not sure what's up with that mixed automotive metaphor.
I also spotted "5CHN3LL" the other day. What kind of leet-speeking **** would roll around with that plate?
Sheesh. People.

Not a license plate but a sticker on a motorcycle helmet that said -my mother in law drives a broom BY the way some of these plates are so funny that if I read them on the street I may crash :-)
I was quite surprised when the DMV website had this plate available. So much so that I thought it might be a computer glitch. But I received the plates yesterday.....

saw an m3 that simply said "fap" ive seen a few imports with better ones like "bukkake" and "fack" theres plenty of more. I always get a kick out of the inappropriate ones

A few years ago while walking through the parking garage at O'Hare, I saw a new 911, white with tinted windows, aftermarket rims, some body work etc. Might have been a turbo, dont remember that as I was in a hurry. The plate?
THE STIG
Been jealous ever since, but not sure if I'm more jealous of the car or the plate.
If you pick a plate that 99% of the population doesn't understand, and spell it in l33t sp33k, you bypass the "everyone can remember it" problem, but you instead get to explain what the plate means.
The California pattern for standard plates is 1AAA111 (one number, three letters, three numbers)...5CHN3LL is close enough at first glance that many people never realize it's a vanity plate...
I've got a 2001 996 twin turbo 6 speed that boasts the vanity plate:
TRBO X2
It's Black on Black, 19" CCW wheels, EVO short throw shifter and 28K miles. AND, it is for sale in Portland, Oregon @ 50K OBO
[phone removed] Ask for Kelly.
In NZ, number plates are assigned randomly unless you want to pay to select a 'special' plate.
This is the new plate for my car which is being sold and used to have a personalised plate. Notice how coincidental the new plate was? When I pointed this out to the local DMV lady she didn't get the significance :-( Some people eh.

I recently bought a 997.1TT and was debating tags, however here in Delaware was also have these great small vintage Black & White tags that all of my cars already have and look great on white. I was debating these however: NOTAVW MEZGER REDGUTS
On topic: On a very bright blue air-cooled 911 near the MSP airport over 20 years ago: YONDER.
Nearly on topic: I have always thought a good plate for a turbo would be: FLOYD R (Johnny Carson reference for the younger crowd).
Close to topic: On a supercharged, tubbed, big-block Chevy II seen many years ago: UD LOSE.
I saw the license plate "Nein 11" on a 993 here in Virginia when i was a teenager. I thought it was the coolest plate I had ever seen, still do! As you can see it inspired my username
I love the roman numerals mentioned in this treat very cool.
So many other Nein variants possible too

Ive been mulling over these two:
NVRFRGT, which i would need to use an alternate spelling of because its taken in one or two variations in NJ. Understandably so account the proximity to NYC.
or
MAUVE, my car is Mirage Metallic and frankly thats just a funny sounding word for a color. Also there seems to be a pinkish/light purple-ish hue to this paint depending on lighting.

The good old days, when a gold on black California plate meant it was an old car. That sort of ticked me off when I came back to California on a business trip and saw that now you can just order these colors for plates.
Nothing aimed at you... I'm just a cranky old guy whose eyes are trained to spot cars with old plates. Now there are these.
Yup CA found another source of money by charging 50 bucks for initial charge and 40 bucks a year more after that, A lot of guy's were taking their license plate and painting them to the old style black plate with yellow lettering.

In California very difficult to get a good custom plate because lots of drivers and rules such as can't have 3 letters and 3 numbers so no "AKA 911" etc. We had a really cool plate ordered and they wrote to us it was too close to one already issued so can't have, but I think a state employee liked and it's on their vehicle right now.
So we ordered this one, and we'll see if they write another letter rejecting because one of their employees also thinks California has #1 sun in the nation and wants it.

For my next plate, I'll take a cue from a triathlon inspired moment. When you pass someone in a tri (always on the left), you should always give them warning. You often do this with saying "On your left" as you approach them from behind to pass. So naturally, the license plate would be "ONURLFT".
License plate is the same as my handle on here. I wanted something subtle enough that only other Porsche nuts would get it.
My friend has the LFTGKLT plate on his air cooled 911. We havent managed to get them together for a photo yet.
And yes, motor mounts and Mk1 tips are on my project list.
The regular Pennsylvania tag Turbo is on a 2008 corvette, go figure. Good thing I did service time. Got my Turbo tag the hard way. Lol kidding.
Guess having Two Turbos Dont count . Laugh Away
I had MCHSHNL (Mach Schnell) on my 930... I thought it meant 'Very fast' but my German friend said it was "Hurry up"... oh well...
At a car show, someone saw it and said, "Hey you must really like your tires!".... He thought it was "Michelin"
It was almost impossible to get a custom plate for our 911 because CA has arcane rules for letter/number combinations and all good ones taken. Finally we got a plate approved, then they sent a rejection letter saying the combination was in use, we appealed, and after about a year they finally sent us the below: California has number "1 SUN" in the nation!
The plate is really bright and colorful, perfect for a California cabriolet.
Love the plate; hope you don't mind that I copied you for mine. Can't wait to get the new plates in. Will have to meet up on one of my trips down south!
I was considering "RAD 991" or "MYRAD991" or "AWESM991".. kind of a spin on my growing up in the 80's. Something about using 911 in a plate feels in current cancel culture doesn't feel right to use anymore.

had that in the UK.
Moved to Norway and deciding what to put on a 997 4 GTS. Amazing here not many take english options so the world is my oyster (outside of the obvious PORSCHE / 911 etc)

Just found out that my personalized plate in CA finally got assigned earlier this month.
Should be receiving it within the next 30 days from the central mailing center.
It's been a little over 7 months.
I called the DMV.
The gal on the phone was very helpful and told me that my plate was finally assigned on Oct. 10th.
But it could still take another 30 - 90 days to reach me according to what she explained to me.
It goes to a mail depot in Sacramento and that's where the next big delay will take place.

Mine on its way to get torn down for a 3.8 ltr rebirth. The 1 Series I daily has EYYYBOZO. I live in Brooklyn and find myself saying it at other drivers a lot when driving around town. In the 911, I am the bozo.
Both! the exhaust tip is the wide oval EP4110. Sourced one on eBay and havent gotten around to installing it.
The script I removed this summer. The PO had put on Carrera CS I am debating on either the 911 badge, or simply Carrera but for now I am enjoying the no badge look.
After seeing yours, I was able to get 91W0N in GA! I just got another one, (A Carrera S cabriolet) so working on my next creative 911 plate! :-P Thx for the great idea!

One plate is OK, two better?
'41-22' reads as 'good couple'.
In LA I used to live near a Benz SL and a 911 that had 'Tab A' and 'Slot B' respectively...
CRERA4S
Of course a replacement Pcar down the road would need to be a 4S too but I am good with that... I could stare at that rear end all day.
Plus, hopefully there will only be additions not replacements...
In the UK we are restricted to dated plates, so my car is an 03, so I can get 2003 plates or less.
This is a 52 plate, so late 2002.
I ended up selling it though as no one really understood it. Obviously it was a turbo.
The best plate I have come across was on an Audi R8 convertible. First model year I believe
NTNINI - as in Not an Innie, an Audi.
On Saturday I was behind a Ferrari with the plate - B4TRF - obviously a new plate.
mine is 04 6MT
Mine. Not a vanity. A passenger normal that was issued by the RMV back in the late 80s. I just happened to get lucky and found it. And, because its a green plate, only one plate required in Massachusetts.
