Reported cause
That sort of problem and its cause is so good to add to the knowledge bank
Leading evidence: 'so good' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'so good' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check oil levels yourself' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

It used oil about 200 miles to the pint, but it was in great condition and went like stink frightening 3.8 E Types and Jags.

Just thought I'd update this thread my howling - turned out to be a cracked piece of undertray the piece that starts at the front spoiler.

If you can check oil levels yourself that might help isolate any low lube cause.

Suggestion
What I would do because this will put your mind at rest or at least give you a sense of knowing where you are, is as advised Peach for them to run "Compression Tests" on each cylinder.

Suggestion
So using a little oil in the combustion chambers ensure that you have got lubrication in the most critical and hottest area of the engine ie the top part of the combustion chambers.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Anyway OPC spotted it during cars annual service and fixed it new piece was £35 quid!
Have noticed a howl from my car recently.
Now I did recently fix my PSE so I can run in stealth mode - and its when its quiet that the howl is most noticeable.
But with my 'ear' tuned into it I am now noticing it all the time.
Now this noise is akin to tyre roar but louder - you know what us 911 owners are like with strange noises (or maybe its only me :? ) - I am now getting paranoid.
Could just be tyre roar - though I suspect not - it does seem to be speed dependant - I am thinking front diff. (OPC replaced seal last service which was leaking apparently).
Or gearbox but I have heard that described as a whine.
Or wheel bearings but driving side to side doesn't increase or decrease the noise so I have discounted that.
Have another set of wheels with new Michilens on so will swop those with my very worn (near the limit) P-Zeros this weekend just to discount tyre roar.
Any ideas chaps.
Hi Vlad - I have read elsewhere that Pirelli's are noisier so could be that - at least you have a ready made check so try a wheel swap, or you just turn your exhuast on and forget about it

Hi Vlad.
When you've got the howl, if you dip the clutch or select neutral (if Tiptronic), what happens to the sound, stays the same or alters?
Similarly if you have the sound and take your foot off so you go into "overun" does the noise change? . Similarly if you tip in and tipout with the throttle when you are in drive does the howl note change or go etc?
Can you give me the location of your other post so I can look at that too.
Regards Big Bob
Hi Bob, the howl is constant - dipping the clutch the sound doesn't go away.
On or off the gas the sound doesnt change either maybe slightly in relation to the road speed but not much.
Thanks for all your help.
Vlad
I'm thinking it might be a 4WD Transfer Box or Differential Noise.
I would get someone to check out that part of the Transmission System for you. If you can check oil levels yourself that might help isolate any low lube cause.
I think I would take this as serious until proven otherwise.
Which was your other post by the way?
Regards Big Bob
Cheers Bob, think you could be right - OPC replaced front diff. seal last year at the service under warranty - as they said it was leaking.
Wonder if the damage was already done. Wonder what exactly they did?
Have booked it in for next week - to look at this and the smoke on start up (which is my other thread) - seems to be a very similar problem to the one peach is having - though I am worried an over-rev might have contributed/broken something.
Vlad
I'm pleased as an old git
ld: , that years of playing about and rebuilding cars is not always wasted. I would push them too re the Diff work if there was more to that fault at the time than just the seal, and they did not deal with it then.
On the smoke on start up, that is a tricky one. When a modern car engine puffs a bit of blue smoke or uses oil, it tends to rattle cages. Your problem could be like Peach's in the area of the oil separator and the feed back into the induction system.
What it can also be is oil from the valve guides. With the nature of the Porsche Engine layout the Exhaust Valves are low down in the system. The Cam Followers are just like little buckets popping up and down in their housings and what that tends to do is pump oil down the guides and this is most evident on start up. A little wear in the Valve guides especially the very hot exhaust side is not a disaster and does not necesarily need attention.
Over revving had that been the cause would have done some tangible damage and you would know. You may though have deposited a lot of oil into the separator though
What I would do because this will put your mind at rest or at least give you a sense of knowing where you are, is as advised Peach for them to run "Compression Tests" on each cylinder. This will give you a clear status on the engine and if there is any serious loss of compression that needs investigating.
On oil burning I had a 150bhp Mark 1 Lotus Elan in 1965. I built the engine myself to increase power by almost 50% from the standard 105bhp. It used oil about 200 miles to the pint, but it was in great condition and went like stink frightening 3.8 E Types and Jags.
So using a little oil in the combustion chambers ensure that you have got lubrication in the most critical and hottest area of the engine ie the top part of the combustion chambers.
Keep in touch after the dealer visit.

Just thought I'd update this thread my howling - turned out to be a cracked piece of undertray the piece that starts at the front spoiler.
I'd obviously cracked it parking with the nose over a kerb.
But the crack didn't open up to form an air scoop until it was up to 30ish - so no obvious gaping air scoop when the car was stationary!
Anyway OPC spotted it during cars annual service and fixed it new piece was £35 quid! I was ready for 'that' phone call - such a relief!
