Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

3 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hello all, Just looking at buying my first Porsche, and particularly like the 996's. A friend of mine's dad runs a Porsche garage up North and warned me about the Intermidiate Diff on the 996, connecting the gearbox/clutch to the engine. Don't know any more technical details. Apparently these can often go causing expensive problems and expensive repairs, and he's had to fix quite a lot on 996's. Is anyone else aware of this problem, or had it happen? Is it something to worry about, and is there any signs or symtoms? Tom

POST 2Original post

Hi and welcome, I think you mean the intermediate shaft, yes it is a well known and well discussed problem, 996's get a lot of unfair press on this issue but if you consider the number of failures versus the number of units produced then its a small percentage and in line with other versions of the 911. If you are worried about it, get a car thats less than 9 years old and get a porsche warranty for £800 and peace of mind. - Simon

POST 3Original post

OPC Warranty is £895 - just renewed mine this week. If the car you are purchasing doesn't currently have the warranty you or the seller will need to put the car thru the OPC 111 point check first. Not sure but this may be about £200.
