IIRC it takes awhile for the exhasut to settle to their final note and even then there are changes, my exhaust has taken six months to get to the note it's at now

Suggestion

My does EXACTLY the same 8) I always start mine for a minute or two before setting off, when I first turn the key and for 30 seconds after it sounds awesome but when the engine starts to warm up a little it calms down

I am normally pretty good at diagnosis using message boards etc but this has got me stumped.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

11 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I have a 2001 996 Carrera 4 and the sports exhaust has started making a great racket on start up. I then drive for about a mile or so and it starts to settle down to the normal note. If I start it up again after a short space of time there is no further problem. However if I leave it for half an hour or so and start up it makes the racket and again settles down after a mile again. I am normally pretty good at diagnosis using message boards etc but this has got me stumped. Is it a major problem apart from startling the neighbours first thing.

POST 2Original post

What do you mean by racket :?: I think they all rattle a bit when cold, I know those I've experienced do, and as the engine temp increases slightly it goes. Sounds like yours could be more substantial though and has only just started happening :?:

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

It's not actually a rattle. The sound of the exhaust is much louder and a little irregular, which as I say settles down to the regular note after a mile or so. It's a little worrying as it has just started, but I'm puzzled as to why it "regularises" relatively quickly.

POST 4Original post

Is it a sort of crackly-poppy noise (not to be confused with the snap crackle and pop of certain breakfast cereal)?

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Loud crackly poppy is about right, but as I say it settles down quite quickly - but it wasn't doing it before which plants the seeds of doubt.

POST 6Original post

Mine does that too, and I noticed a 997 C2S on youtube with pse did the same thing on cold start up. I wouldn't worry about it. I think it sounds cool 8)

POST 7Original post

i have a similar problem. OPC have advised that the baffles are on there way out!!!

POST 8Original post

I'd find that hard to believe- I've only had my pse for a year

POST 9Original post

Is it something to do with the cold idle speed?, being at 1k rather than 800 or so. Try keeping the revs at 1k after it's warmed up and see if the resonance causes vibration through the exhaust resulting in that noise. IIRC it takes awhile for the exhasut to settle to their final note and even then there are changes, my exhaust has taken six months to get to the note it's at now

POST 10Original post

The baffles had gone in my PSE when I took delivery of it and the good old OPC whacked a new system on for me My does EXACTLY the same 8) I always start mine for a minute or two before setting off, when I first turn the key and for 30 seconds after it sounds awesome but when the engine starts to warm up a little it calms down I then drive off on my journey :bye: I wouldn't worry

POST 11Original post

ditto, and mine is a Ruf exhaust on a TT, I only wish it would stay sounding that good after it warmed up  the original pipe was the same too.
