The cabriolet roof on my 996 turbo has a tensioning bowden cable that appears to run along the side of the soft top from the front windscreen edge and is secured by a loop and a philips screw that is clearly visible as the roof opens and shuts.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

The cabriolet roof on my 996 turbo has a tensioning bowden cable that appears to run along the side of the soft top from the front windscreen edge and is secured by a loop and a philips screw that is clearly visible as the roof opens and shuts. The cable consisting of several strands is starting to break up, how easy is it to replace this cable as it dissapears into a thin tunnel in the soft top? Apparently there are seperate cables that are identical for each side part No 996 561 931 00 costing £50 each plus VAT. My local OPC quotes 2.5 hours at £110 an hour plus VAT. That works out at about £400 to replace a small bowden cable! Anyone done this job before and can assist me as to its complexity?

POST 3Original post

No experience of this particular issue, but you can at least cut that quote in half by taking the car to an indy.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Many thanks for all your replies. I approached two trimmers, both refused as they stated it needed a special tool to crimp the cable end. It has now been booked in with Camtune in Surrey whose hourly rate is £64 plus VAT, although they recon Porsches quote of 2.5 hrs is probably not long enough. I have had good service from Camtune in the past and will keep you all posted .
