This is not a probability of success.

Porsche do a special and very expensive lubricant for the rubber seals that can help to eliminate squeeks, but I think the rubber seals gradually compress with time and you need a specialist to adjust the two pegs at the rear.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi, I have a 1999 996 cabriolet and seem to have a problem when the roof is up it knocks against the windscreen header rail. It only really does it on bumby roads but can get really annoying. I have checked the rubber seals and they look OK and it does'nt leak, but could someone let me know if this is a common problem or if anything can be done to fix it. Thanks Mike

POST 2Original post

Nope, mine doesn't rattle even on potholed surfaces. Feels proper solid. Could be a host of things I reckon. Roof has exapnaded a touch and there is a bit of give, seals although looking ok might need replacing. Does the hook when closing the roof grab the windscreen and really pull the roof over nice and tight? Might be a bit of give there. I'g give Southbound trimmers a call to get the pro's advice.

POST 3Original post

Might be the centreing pegs described on the attached TSB. There are quite a few TSBs about noises in the cabriolet top. If you would like some more info, PM me with your email address.

POST 4Original post

Roof rattle I have owned 2 996 cabs, squeeking & banging of the hard tops can be a problem you often have to live with. The hardtops do tend to settle down after a week or so after fitting. Porsche do a special and very expensive lubricant for the rubber seals that can help to eliminate squeeks, but I think the rubber seals gradually compress with time and you need a specialist to adjust the two pegs at the rear. Also the mastic that secures the seals on the hard tops often goes brittle with time, causing leaks, but can be re stuck to stop these. However I was quoted this as a 4 hr job for the complete hard top. I asked for just the front part to be re stuck as this was where my leak originated and Camtune ot Godalming, as always did a great job, for one hours labour (£65 plus VAT). Hope this helps.
