Absolutely, I used the word "rust" in the absence of anything else, lets change it to corrosion.
Leading evidence: 'Use word "rust" in the absence of anything else, lets' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check car manual this morning' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

When I checked the car manual this morning, it said that only coolant/antifreeze authorised by Porsche should be used.

lots of the other "cheaper" fluids should be changed after 2 years to ensure they do their job!!

the type of water shouldn't make a difference on whether the material will rust or not, i think (oh i just know i'm going to be painfully humliated and corrected :floor: ) that any impurities might change the rate but the actual rusting is more a function of waters conductivity which would allow rust to form from reaction with air and iron etc?

i am not sure whom does the coolant for porsche but yours will either be the green stuff or the pink stuff and woul have thought for topping up purposes you would be able to use a decent coolant from motor factors or dare i say halfrauds....

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

The coolant in my 996 tt has now reached the minimum level so i need to top it up. When I checked the car manual this morning, it said that only coolant/antifreeze authorised by Porsche should be used. Does anyone know which coolant is authorised by Porsche and where I can buy it ?
Many thanks
are you not worried why your coolant has reached low level...

its not that dear from porsche i think £5 a litre..
I will go to an OPC first thing tomorrow morning to buy some coolant. I heard that it is possible to add water but I do not want to take any risk so I will buy coolant from an OPC. One thing that is puzzling though is that the manual says that if the coolant level is too low then the temperature gauge warning light flashes and a warning is displayed in the on-board computer. This has not happened in my car, does anyone know why ?
Thanks - Am I right to assume though that if the coolant level reaches the minimum level or is under the minimum level then the temperature gauge should flash ?
Coolant is just coolant isn't it? Why should one purchase it at £8.25/ltr from an OPC when a £5 bottle from Halfords is just as good? Or is it as good? After all, you are going to be mixing the stuff with pure water anyway to get the right concentration depending on the season (current season would be a low concentration - approx a 33% solution).
If anyone knows better, please shout!

My 997 C2S manual recommends a mix of 50/50 with water for protection up to -35 deg. C.
I read somewhere that mixing coolant can cause the coolant not to function correctly and could cause issues with rust etc. Dunno if it's true, but why risk it for £3/litre.
50% is the correct solution concentration for winter motoring. As for the rust issue with mixing coolants, I've never heard of that before; 100% solution of coolant is supposed to be mixed with pure water anyway. If mixed with tap water, perhaps there could be an issue with rust. I don't know enough about the stuff to advise.

the porsche coolant is a mobil one anyhow, and the same stuff is available from VW/Audi dealers (although branded VW it carries the same "name" as the mobil version (sg-1 or something, i'll have a look tonight...)
It's a fair point you make, but like I say I don't know if it's true or not.
I asked at the OPC about ionised water and they said no, any water will do. The chemical composition of the coolant ensured the water was cleaned of any impurities :?: Perhaps this may be reduced if it's mixed with other coolant. Sounds plausible I suppose.

Absolutely, I used the word "rust" in the absence of anything else, lets change it to corrosion.
But I'm not that nerdy to try to disprove you. You're probably right.
As I understand it you are not supposed to mix types, cant remember the reason though, sorry!
Not sure if it the same for all 996 variants but the Porsche coolant (there are other equivalents) is long life. circa 5 years. lots of the other "cheaper" fluids should be changed after 2 years to ensure they do their job!! Work out how much you need and the sums speak for themselves....not worth putting anything in the cooling system that might compromise other parts which by comparison will make the coolant seem "cheap" IMHO!!!
