Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

For the car, I have found a quite good used car, with very low mileage.

I was wondering if it is possible to change easily the CD player unit without disturbing the use of the onboard computer in the PCM1.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hello Guys,
I am about to buy a 996 from 1998.
Of course, there is a PCM1 8bits units and the simple CD player for the nav system.
I was wondering if it is possible to change easily the CD player unit without disturbing the use of the onboard computer in the PCM1.
I don't plan to use the GPS part of it anymore since my TomTom is much more powerfull (and up to date... )
If it is possible, what king of unit will suits best the whole thing?
On the other hand, should I decide to remove the PCM1 to install a 2DIN unit from another build, will I lose the inboard computer ? I mean, all the information stored regarding the car (average speed, duration of use and so on...)
I thank you in advance for you help.
V
Information about the car is not stored in the PCM1 unit, it's in-built into the car. The PCM1 simply relays this information.
Personally, I would remove the entire unit and replace with a 2DIN unit (something like a Pioneer), as it's not possible to upgrade part of it unfortunately.
PS Try and stretch your budget to a clear light 99 model if possible, as these have had very minor improvements to the engine.
Thank you
I am a French, living in France, but looking for good information wherever I can find it !!
@GD : thks for the information.
Then I can change the PCM1 unit without regret... I just need to find one that fit neetly on the board...
For the car, I have found a quite good used car, with very low mileage. This is a very good deal I think. And my budget is already badly overstretched...
Ok, but if you've stretched your finances, then I'd carefully consider your options.
I'm sure you're aware that the running costs will be about 2500 Euro's / year and that it's not possible to put a Porsche warranty on a 1998 age car.
Also consider that a new engine will be 8000 Euro's.
I don't want to put you off buying a car, because they're generally reliable cars, but they are expensive cars to fix if they go wrong.......
