Suggestion

Personally i wouldn't bother, i doubt you'd notice 16bhp(alleged), all it will do is smooth out the power curve, personally i stick to what Porsche have done which i would suggest cost alot of money in R&D , i would say that they probably know a bit better than a company that flash changes your ECU for £600.

Suggestion

A remap can make better use of the higher octane fuels, often to detriment of lower octanes, so providing you don't fill with 95 or less you'll see a benefit.

IIRC e-maps use remaps from one of many German sources, these have formed the basis of the many remaps from the smaller operators.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi, just wondering if anyone has had much experience of remaping the 996? (an 04 C4S) I've had big BMWs remapped v.succesfully adding lots of bhp, torque and saving gas but doesn't seem as popular with the porsche?

POST 2Original post

Hi fraserb & welcome, I had the Revo remap a good while ago from the Porscheshop (who happen to have a blooming good offer on at the mo with Revo) I initially had the 5 hour trial installed, went for a blast for about an hour and returned with an insane grin asking Paul to 'install it quickly please' It's a good driving mod regarding useability over outright power. The motor picks up cleaner and much quicker through the midrange from say 4000rpm plus it really revs faster with a much stronger pull. If your crusing at say 80 in top then drop a cog and floor it, the differance was MUCH more noticeable!! Mind you mine is a 2001 3.4l so can't say over yours which has 20 ponies more to start with. However like i mentioned it's about how it drives and i'm sure it will improve the acceleration through the higher gears. Go for the trial....................and i bet you have it installed

POST 3Original post

sounds awesome, how much was it from Porsche shop ? they are based in the midlands arent they ?

POST 5Original post

I was looking at something similar, superchips £399 Softronic £655 Revo £599 All seem to offer + 16bhp When its a software flash, it always strikes me as incredible mark up Interesting to know if its noticeable

POST 6Original post

superchip :hand: I prefer McCains Stick to known brands such as REVO http://911uk.com/viewtopic.php?t=36741

Hi Fraser My experience is the same as Flatsixes. Porscheshop gave me a good deal too! Go for it. Big Bob :bye:

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

cheers Guys! had my last bmw done by www.e-maps.co.uk who come to you and charged £300. awesome job and they are well respected on the bmw forums. He's just told me that he can do the porsche for same price. travels to you, does full scan, pre-diagnoistics, remaps the ecu etc, test drives etc. he's quoting same gains as your refs for half the price (it is only software!). Having used him before and knowing his rep, I reckon I'll get him to do it.

POST 9Original post

I won't disagree with you on his BMW/Merc reputation, but as far as I'm aware he's unheard of in the Porsche community. That's not to say he can't deliver an improvement, you'll find a generic map being used. IIRC e-maps use remaps from one of many German sources, these have formed the basis of the many remaps from the smaller operators. Personally I'd go for a remap from one of the well known Porsche tuners ie. REVO, GIAC, DMS at least you'll be getting a tried, tested and improved map. If you are considering other options ie. exhaust, manifold, breathing then make sure you consider a custom remap, or at least a remap that has options to cover these mods.

POST 10Original post

Hi FraserB - I had mine done a few thousand miles back, I came out of an e39 M5 and my C2 felt a little underwhelming from a power (torque) perspective - an induction kit and map made the car a lot more responsive through the mid range and well worth the investment. Lots of the peeps on here have had these mods, the turbo maps have a lot more impact than on a NA car though. - Simon

POST 11Original post

Personally i wouldn't bother, i doubt you'd notice 16bhp(alleged), all it will do is smooth out the power curve, personally i stick to what Porsche have done which i would suggest cost alot of money in R&D , i would say that they probably know a bit better than a company that flash changes your ECU for £600. Without the forced induction of extra air i can see how you can increase bhp ? chip tuning a NA car you can smooth the power curve and remove rev limiter but i can't see how you can add bhp. just my view, just remember bhp figures can easily be manipulated.

POST 12Original post

A remap can make better use of the higher octane fuels, often to detriment of lower octanes, so providing you don't fill with 95 or less you'll see a benefit. Smoothing a curve is one thing, but maintaining the power/torque longer across the rev range is better than increasing the limit, so whilst the car might not increase in BHP at the top end it will across the range, you will feel this! That aside, using better air filtration, improvements in the fueling and timing you will see more top end horses....but only if your remap takes advantage of these.

POST 13Original post

Be careful with remaps / performance chips: As someone else said, if it was that easy, why don't the manufacturers do it? OK, so part of it is to allow for sub-standard fuels in some parts of the World, but it is mostly about ensuring reliability throughout the warranty period! So power gains from electronics alone will inevitably accelerate engine wear, and may even cause catastrophic failure if it results in excessive combustion temperatures for example

POST 14Original post

I like to think as some remaps as code optimisation, as an IT consultant/ex software engineer I can see the value in this, taking advantages of the tolerances ie UK specific temperatures, fuels etc. So rather than working with the manufacturers generic map having one customised to ones environment is the better route to take.

POST 15Original post

I can't be bothered to get too into this debate because if you really really look into the science behind the difference between torque(the power you feel) and BHP, and also the science behind higher octane fuels(ignition temp) Its very indepth. Just remember BHP figures sell things. All i would say is that a manufacturer spends millions developing an engine and programming the ECU for optimum performance taking into consideration internal stresses on components and thousands of other aspects that go into the design of an engine, i doubt that the people that remap and flash your ECU for £600 do the same, i'd personally never risk my engine for a power increase of an alleged 20bhp. I put my trust with Porsche. When i need more power i'll get a 911 turbo!! Which might not be too long away
