Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Leading evidence: 'Install new' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Install new' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

If so, repair/replace the heads and manifold, put the engine back into the car and have a ball.

, but I believe he explained in a post just up a few in the thread that he had the block assembly milled out - the IMS bearing hole made bigger to accommodate a bigger bearing and to make it really simple to change when a clutch is being done.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I bought this 987S 2006 model with broken engine. The engine was in good shape with all service records stamped until the second owner bought it and went to a local "mechanic" (plumber), This plumber was supposed to repair a oil leak from the
IMS
shaft seal.
He swapped the seal and somehow, he put the camshafts out of timing...
When he started the engine hi heard some crunch sound (two broken
exhaust
valves) so he pulled out the engine again for inspection but when it had it out, he succeed to drop the engine upside down like a toast with the marmalade down, crashing the intake manifolds. Then he realised he was in a problem and then he called me in to help him out, as he told me this story a just have to laugh and tell him that if this was my car i would have his balls chop off.
So I helped and bought the car at a good pricehttps://********.com/forums/graemlins/bigok.gif
If it were a Base 2.7, I'd have yet another good fortune for you. (I have a perfectly running
Boxster
with the 2.7 with only 47,000 miles. I'm going to do a motor swap soon because of some unique circumstances)
But you need one of those big britches flat6's.

The engine has two broken
exhaust
valves and some small notches at one piston and the cylinder head.
What cylinder heads are compatible with this engine?
986
or 996 etc…
As there’s a lot of old Porsches at the islands I believe I can find a used unit locally.
Cheers

Jan,
You can google search for how to repair the
IMS
seal. Your plumber friend, forgot to lock the camshafts before attempting to change the seal. There maybe no actual issues with the
IMS bearing
itself. If so, repair/replace the heads and manifold, put the engine back into the car and have a ball. Unless the piston bent the connecting rod, or has a crack from the valves hitting the crown of the piston, you should be in good shape. Replacing the heads is much less work than trying to rebuild the block, so the difficulty of your work is much less, that is unless you find a replacement motor that is ready to go from another
Boxster
. Not sure about other
Porsche
motors fitting the motor mounts, transaxle and other necessary motor items.
Let us know what you did and the outcome. It maybe a great story.
I just picked up the engine at the plumbers place this afternoon, The bad thing is that he unassembled the motor completely, so no I have to cross my fingers he didn’t loose any parts or bolts etc..
The good thing is I believe the damaged combustion chamber doesn’t look to bad, I will let it in a specialised workshop to see what they think about it!
After that I will make a part list to order what’s needed.
Just from a story line point of view, after picking up the motor and the crate of parts, what does the
IMS bearing
look like? The 1st photo shows the
IMS
shaft with the bearing removed. I believe that is what started this whole mess?
Well the
IMS bearing
was spinning a bit rough but wasn’t broken, The
IMS
shafts gummy seal was leaking a little oil, what happened was when a not qualified mechanic tried to change this seal and the ball bearing not blocking the camshafts.
Off course he didn’t mach to pull out the bearing but he tried!
Bad for him and the prior owner, good for me as this gave me the opportunity buying a nice car at good price!
Are those all
exhaust
valves? I cannot tell if they are different diameters in the picture. Just wondering if this was done by cranking with the starter motor. Can you imagine the noise the plumber heard with his hand on the key? The motor didn't complete a full cycle or your would have 12 of those bent/broken valves.
I’m a bit confused about how to measure the weight of the piston to be available to order a new unit!
I have seen that there is two different piston models 535-541g and 541-547g.
As you can see my piston weights 544g with rings, clip and pin.
Am I’m wrong weighting the piston together with rings, clips and pin?
I would think you need to order all 6 pistons to assure you get the right harmonic weight. Also, these motors are carefully balanced at the factory. There are a number of engine rebuilders on this web site, please step in here to add your expertise.
Sorry my fault! didn’t read it well, the correct weights for new factory pistons is:
A. 535-541g Ref 99610303215
B. 541-547g Ref 99610303216.
As my pistons weights 544g they belong to the second group Ref 99610303216.
Cylinder heads back from machine shop, The damage one has now 6 new
exhaust
valves, vale seats and valve guides.
Now its my to turn clean and sodablast before assemble.
I`m rebuilding this engine just to have something fun to use until i finish a more powerful unit for this car.
As I didn’t unassembled the engine and it’s no way for me to know if there any lost parts, bolts etc. I will just put everything together first before I glue it together with gaskets and
Loctite
I will handle over the cylinder block tomorrow to the machine shop to make the
IMS
hole bigger using a CNC milling machine.
This way I can change the
IMS
ballbearing everythime I change clutch.
At the lefthand side you have the improved
IMS
and at the righthand side the OEM unit, increasing diameter at the engine block
IMS
hole to 62mm it will be no problem changing this in the future...
I'm not
@El Vikingo Tropical
, but I believe he explained in a post just up a few in the thread that he had the block assembly milled out - the IMS bearing hole made bigger to accommodate a bigger bearing and to make it really simple to change when a clutch is being done. I think that's the only way the later 987.1 engines can get a new IMS bearing aside from splitting the cases..
I installed a new
AliExpress
sound system this week, and I have to say I’m surprised by the good quality of the sound!
Now I have reverse cámara and all android stuff..
