I suspect its a slipping belt, as the temp guage seems to be higher than usual operating temp (aside question what is the normal/expected operating temperature - I seem to be running over 80 on the guage - I estimate about 100.

Suggestion

If you are in a hot climate your engine will run hotter as the best you can cool down to is ambient temperature - and it's nigh on impossible to get to that.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

4 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Wonder if anyone can help with a question: We're currently on a road trip through Italy, France and Spain - we're a week in to our 4 week trip and my 2000 996 C4 has developed a (dry sounding) squeal from the engine bay that happens just above idle and on deceleration (disappears when accelerating), but appears to be getting worse. Now... I WILL obviously take the car to an OpC in Italy (Florence being the nearest city or an independent if anyone can recommend one), but I just wondered if any of you guys could help me pinpoint what the problem might be or if it sounds worse than it is... a. so I don't get ripped off whilst away having work done that's unnecessary and b. so that if I am going to deal with a mechanic I can explain what the problem is and avoid any confusion. We have just spent a week in Tuscany in a remote house located miles down very dusty unmade dirt tracks (not ideal for the car I know!), and the engine bay is pretty cake in dust. Could this be adding to the problem? When we left to get on the autostrada, we stopped at a service station and I blasted a lot of the dust off with an air line, which helped temporarily, but now the squeal seems to be getting worse. I suspect its a slipping belt, as the temp guage seems to be higher than usual operating temp (aside question what is the normal/expected operating temperature - I seem to be running over 80 on the guage - I estimate about 100. Is this too high?). Also, prior to leaving for the trip, I've occasionally noticed a very short squeak from the rear end at take off (like a very short squeal, which again sounds dry and is similar to this long squeal we're now experiencing). I'm sorry for the long post, but as we're away, I want to get as much info as I can. Should we stop driving the car immediately and get it to the nearest OPC / mechanic? Should we try and 'clear' the dust from the engine bay? We're a long way from home, so I'd really appreciate any help or advice any members can give us. Thanks in advance.

POST 2Original post

I would not think that dust should not really be too much of a factor? But this noise should get looked at asap, as I have not heard of that before. I hope you have a recovery service in case? Independent Porsche specialists in Italy are a bit thin on the ground, although worth trying a Ferrari garage if you see one ?

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks... Sundeep... Thanks for the quick response. Now a bit more worried that the noise is not something common! I was hoping it might be down to the belt nearing the end of its life - I know that the drive belts are due for change at 48k mile intervals and my car's now just at 90K, so it's imminent? Anyone else got any insight? If not, I guess it's a trip to Florence OPC with Visa clenched in crossed fingers! TC

POST 4Original post

Check to see if the noise disappears with your AC switched off. It could be your AC compressor giving you the problem. If you are in a hot climate your engine will run hotter as the best you can cool down to is ambient temperature - and it's nigh on impossible to get to that. Let us know how you get on at OPC Ray
