I then cleaned the rubber seal, applied some vaseline and also cleaned all around the edges...it's been fine since.

I don't know if it has a seperate fuse...you can check the fuse box, but would suspect it does.

Could you be a bit more detailed as to what did you clean & lubricate?

all you need to do is open the roof lubricate the runners and operate the roof a few times, then fully close it and try your rear window and make sure it works properly, that should be it hopefully!

Ofc, the OPC would not do the repair under the extended warranty (they were very nice otherwise, and they did change an oil sensor on warranty) Fortunately, this problem has been with the car ever since we bought it and the seller (harbour cars @ chichester) accepted the charge.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I fixed my problem by applying a little bit of pressure on the inside of the window and at the same time pushing the rear window open button on the key fob.
the glass panel over the back seat on my 2003 Targa has decided it wont open when I press either the button on the key fob or the button on the sill - anyone else had this problem and can help me remedy it? cheers
I also have the same MY as you Triff. Not yet come across this problem. How about re-setting everything by disconnecting the battery and then re-connecting again after a few seconds? :?

Hi,
Yes, I had a problem similar to this a few weeks ago. I could hear the motor trying to open the rear window...but it was stuck....can you hear your rear window motor when you push the button? If not, I wonder if it's fused? I don't know if it has a seperate fuse...you can check the fuse box, but would suspect it does.

My problem started after I gave it a wash with a jet wash (and I'm not doing that again).
Cheers.
I have had this happen three times. The first was because it needed lubricating (silicone grease the targa owners favourite tool). The other two have been because it thought the roof was open. Cured by opening it fully and then closing. There is an interlock so the rear hatch will not open when the roof is open.
a coomon problem
a good clean and lube should fix it
dont use wd40 - yr car will stink !

I also had this problem a few weeks ago, first the rear window would not pull itself down when I shut it, then the roof would not operate. It seems one was telling the other they were not shut properly, so on GD's advice I Had a bit tinker around and managed to get the roof operating, then gave it the old silicone grease treatment and opend and closed it a few times, after that lo and behold the rear window locked down properly. I haven't had any probs since, now it will be getting a wee dose of silicon every now and then!
Same problem here (996 02 Targa). Not a fuse problem, but I had suspected electricals/electronics given the apparent randomness of the occurrence and that it is normally accompanied by the roof refusing to open or close. Sometimes the roof comes back alive after shutting down the car for a few minutes. Start it up, hope for a miracle, and most of the times things go back to normal.
When they don't I have no recourse but to reset the whole thing by disconnecting the battery for about 2 minutes.
I am going to give a try to your mechanical option -before starting the uphill battle of getting my local OPC to look at it under the extended W-

Sad to say, it did not work. And I think the things is deteriorating. Symptoms:
1-Start the engine
2-push the rocker switch to open the roof.
3-nothing happens.
4-try a few times, still nothing
5-drive away, do a few miles
6-oops the roof opens
Same thing happens when using the folding sunscreen.
I have not even tried operating the hatchback door in the last couple of weeks. I hate it when it doesn't lock properly and I have to disconnect the battery to put things back in order.
This may all be happening because you have not operated the rear hatch, that can efect the roof operation as happened to mine, the roof would not operate at all until I opened and shut the rear hatch and then everything went ok, after that!!!!!!!
> I have not even tried operating the hatchback door in the last couple of weeks. I hate it when it doesn't lock properly and I have to disconnect the battery to put things back in order.
One thing to note:
Do not allow the rear hatch to drop (ie. don't shut/slam the hatch as you would on any other car), as it breaks the catches and it won't catch/lock properly.
I have found the best way is to gently drop the hatch down and put your fingers between the body of the car and the hatch (so that it's about 1" from being shut).
Then gently push the hatch down until you can feel it engage and then allow the motors to pull the hatch shut and locked (ie. don't keep pushing the hatch).
Well it ended up being the microsw that checks whether the roof is closed/open. Took it to the OPC, they changed it and now all's well (it's been a week or so).
Ofc, the OPC would not do the repair under the extended warranty (they were very nice otherwise, and they did change an oil sensor on warranty) Fortunately, this problem has been with the car ever since we bought it and the seller (harbour cars @ chichester) accepted the charge. Good guys.
Thanks for all the advice.
