Hi new to the forum, I have a 2005
Boxster
987 and it has been trouble free until yesterday when unlocking the door, the driver side mirror keeps on trying to move upwards and outwards even after it has reached the tilt limit and it is making the sound of the motor trying to move against the limit stops. It stopped moving eventually and I can move it back via the side joystick (i.e. the control works). But the memory function stopped working as well as this moving up and outwards motion keeps happening everytime I unlock the car. Any ideas? Motor problem or a controller feedback issue?
Possibly just a bad memory setting. It sounds as if you have memory seats/mirrors (not a common accessory for the
Boxster
, but a handy one.) It will remember the last set positions of the seat/mirrors and attempt to reset them to that position when you unlock the vehicle.
I'm going to assume this works like the system in my '11
Cayenne
- but it might not so the owner's manual is worth reading and checking.
Get in the car and reset the mirror to the position you want it to be in. Press "Set" then one of the numbered buttons on the memory control in the drivers door. It should beep telling you it's saved the settings. Then get out of the vehicle and lock the door using the lock button on the key. That links those memory settings with that key. You can have two different memory settings - each activated by unlocking the car using the button on the key.
One other oddball thing that could be happening - since you're driving on the other side of the road, your starboard side (right side sitting in the car) mirror is the drivers mirror. In other countries that drive "normally" - that mirror would be the passenger's mirror. The
Cayenne
mirror control has an option for the mirror glass to automatically tilt down when the car goes into reverse. On my
Cayenne
that's the starboard mirror. This action is controlled by the mirror controller, the bottom right button turns the function on.. one press and a red
LED lights
in the button indicating it's active. When you move out of reverse the mirror returns to it's normal position. If somehow the control unit got confused which country it's setup for (a setting in the front body control module or the "gateway" I believe) - the odd mirror behavior could be related to this. It's MUCH more likely that the other explanation will cure the problem for you... so I'd try that first after confirming by reading the manual that is how the memory function works. DO remember there are two memory storage positions - one for each key.

If I had to take a guess I'd say the potentiometers in the mirror (that give feedback on the position) are shot, or you've got an issue with the wiring to the pots.
I had a similar issue with the memory on my driver's lumbar adjustment. Sometimes when I unlocked the car it would fully inflate the lumbar cushion. Probably a similar issue with the sensor.
I "fixed" it by completely clearing the seat memory. I forget how I did this, some combination of the buttons, do a search. Then I left position 1 empty (the position that it automatically moves to when you unlock with the key) and just programmed my preferred seat/mirror settings in position 3. This way it doesn't try to adjust the seats and mirrors when I open the car, but if they've been moved I can get back to them just by hitting button 3.
Hi
deilenberger
,
thanks for the comment, tried reading the manual and resetting the memory function to no avail, seems like the mirror no longer respond to the memory button being pressed.
Thank you for the comment, I assume the pots are within the motor unit and one potential fix is to get a new motor unit.
Unfortunately isclacy was just visiting P9 for the immediate problem and hasn't been back since the last post. So you'll probably never hear what fixed the problem.
It would seem common courtesy is not so common.
Yeah I half expected to get nothing since this is an old post. Life happens, it’s all good.
When I manage to fix mine I’ll update here for the 3rd person with the same problem, for whatever reason it seems fairly rare
I have the same problem on my 2005
Cayenne
. Replacing the mirror motor didn’t help. My problem started after I manually moved the mirror in order to replace the glass. I was hoping to find a way to completely reset the memory system.
