Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Leading evidence: 'Check fuel sender first' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check fuel sender first' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. Suggestion
If they are testing the Cluster with PIWIS, the PIWIS is capable of making the fuel gauge read at different levels by command so that it can verify function ( it does this independently no matter what the sending unit is saying )...So if that is what they were using I would trust that diagnosis...

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi all,
My gas tank level stopped reading all of a sudden, and my shop is saying that they're seeing a fault in the instrument cluster. They can't exclude a tank sensor problem, but since they found the instrument cluster problem they wanted to start there.
Unfortunately a new instrument cluster is expensive ($4k) and backordered. Can't find an appropriate used part, and it comes with the annoying effect of not having accurate mileage for my car. Does anyone know if it can be repaired? Basically that hand won't go above 1/8 full. The rest of the instrument cluster works fine.
I've been driving the car while keeping an eye on the trip odometer and filling up when I get to a certain mileage. That's been working, but it's not the best.
Car is a 2000 Carrera Cabriolet (996). It was connected to a battery tender right around this time, so I'm not sure if that's related. The car is normally a daily driver but was parked for a month with the battery tender just prior to noticing this new issue.
Thanks in advance!
More likely the fuel sender in the fuel tank or a broken wire. Remove battery, then the plate under the battery. The fuel pump and sender are right there. New fuel pump and sender is a lot cheaper than the cluster.
Thanks for the suggestion! I was certainly hoping that was the issue instead of an instrument cluster problem!
What they told me was that they were mimicking the fuel sender signal to the instrument cluster and it still wasn't reading higher than 1/8 tank, which is why they thought that was the problem. If that is true, then it seems less likely to be a fuel sender problem? Is this a common diagnostic technique, and would that exclude a fuel sender problem?
Well, as a fallback if it is the cluster, Palo Alto Speedometer can fix your cluster and save your mileage.

I still would check the fuel sender first. But that is just me...
