Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Leading evidence: 'Clean often' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Clean maf as often as previously stated' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Simialr to foodbiker, I have used K&N in the past for other cars but no more due the the same reasons.

Suggestion
Also, won't have to clean the MAF as often as previously stated.

Suggestion
You can replace with an OEM, OR buy the recharge kit OR just clean with dishwasher soap / used toothbrush then LIGHTLY coat with your leftover engine oil (if you don't want to buy the recharge kit).
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi all,
I hope you’re all enjoying your Porsche’s during this spring.
I took off my engine cover today to have a look at the engine filter and it looked absolutely filthy to me, but how old do you think it looks?
I’ve had 987.1CS since 50k and she now has 57k after 3 years. She last had a major service two years ago this month and she goes back in for another major on Monday. I don’t think the engine filter should be that dirty, do you? Opinions always welcome.
When in doubt change it, you’re already getting free labor and visual inspection can’t reveal how it’s flowing. Additionally that appears to be a K&N or equivalent just an FYI. If you intend on replacing it with another performance filter, consider using
FCP Euro
because they have lifetime replacement warranty. Lastly, there is a canister screw to release the filter, locate it, remove it and “ a little puzzle ish” maneuvers for removal and installation a la some rotating and twists.
Deffo replacing on Monday. Do you think it looks like a normal old filter? I’ve seen people take these out before and they look nowhere near as dirty as mine… So I’m thinking the garage didn’t change it two years ago 🤔
Like I said it’s very hard to judge the remaining flow based on visuals. I suggest you go with mileage and elapsed time. No matter how dirty it is or isn’t a fresh one can do nothing but improve the cars performance.
If it is a K&N it has an oil treatment. It can be washed and re-oiled then reused. I had one once and decided to junk it and go back to OEM. If it gets too much oil, it will foul the MAF and throw codes.
Thoughts/feelings: (1) Change it out with OEM. If K&N, trash it. I have used K&N on BMWs for years (motorcycles/cars) but now I'm questioning if that was a good idea. I have not/will not put them in my P-cars as they're more porous. (2) Check back in a year and see if it's still getting so dirty. If it is, then there's a reason why. I bet you'll be just fine, TBH and it was simply neglected.
K&N are good on cars that race.
1) significant time at or near WOT.
2) intake and MAF cleaned regularly.
3) filter replaced/cleaned often.
4) engine torn down before normal life end.

I wouldn’t use motor oil, K&N makes a recharge kit, it comes with a proper cleaning solution and the proper oil. I have one, but I no longer use it for reasons I specified above.
I replace with original Mann or
Mahle
every ten thousand miles. The originals flow as well and protect better than any oiled reusable. Also, won't have to clean the MAF as often as previously stated.
An important consideration is that any "extra" flow is only relevant at (or very near) WOT.
At all other throttle positions, the throttle plate, not the filter is the predominant restriction (doing its job)
