My original intention was to replace the gear knob with an aluminium Rennline version that I bought new.

Thanks for the post, very helpful, I'm going to order a set for a few scuffs around the cabin.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.
15 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

Thus leaving behind a perfect black lettering, it worked brilliantly.
This content is in one of my project threads, but thought it might useful as a separate thread since when I looked I couldn't find any details on it anywhere. Various photos of the process here, with a short video at the end to talk you through it, really easy once you know how to get the plastic part off. It is held on with plastic prongs and needs to be levered off by getting between the plastic and the leather at the base with a wide flat screwdriver, then pushing it all the way up to lever it off.

Very nice job.
Have you thought about how to get the numerals black on the knob?
Years ago I had some centre caps and wheels re painted and subsequently lost the contrast colour in the script. The fella that did it told me how to get them black again by spraying over with gloss black and quickly wiping away again with thinners on a cloth. Thus leaving behind a perfect black lettering, it worked brilliantly.
However, I recently tried to do this again, with my home refinished centre caps and failed miserably to wipe the black off without ruining the silver...I suspect it's something to to with the type of lacquer used.
Anyway, if you can figure it out it would be the finishing touch on your heat knob refurb.. :thumb:
Not sure what MC thinks, but my experience with the Colour Lock line has been fantastic. Check out their YouTube videos. The products and instructional videos are impressive. The price is not low but the reward level is high. Shade match is spot on for Porsche colors.
Get the big tube of the filler. You mightn't need it all, but you'll be disappointed if you don't have enough to do your refurb just right.

I have only used it for this one small part, but it does seem to be superb. I will be doing a few other parts as needed in the future with it. I would definitely recommend it.

Did you say there is a YouTube vid for getting the plastic insert off the gearknob? Do you have a link?
Thanks again
Very helpful information - as my identical silver fascia needs paint restoration.
I had bought the paint / lacquer in advance to refresh the boot & bonnet release levers.
My original intention was to replace the gear knob with an aluminium Rennline version that I bought new. It was only afterwards that I realised that the original gaiter (as per yours) won't work with that knob. :duh:
