Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Leading evidence: 'Check new' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check new' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

But for full disclosure I bought a spin-on adapter for my next change mainly for simplicity and to avoid the mess I always make removing the large, oil filled housing.

The housing gets replaced every few oil changes because the bypass spring gets weak.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I am about to do an oil change on a 2006
Boxster S
. I am reading that the oil filter cover
cap
should also be replaced. I have never heard this before, is this true?
There is a spring at the bottom of the filter canister that is part of the bypass valve in case the filter were to become clogged.
Porsche
considers that a wear item just like they do many other items on the car, and claims it needs to be replaced every oil change. With that being said, I used the same cover for 9 years on my car, and I'm willing to bet the the majority of DIY guys dont ever bother to swap it out either.
Thank you. I have read that. Very confusing. I contacted
FCP
and asked the question. This is their reply "This
cap
does not have a service interval, this is replaced whenever the need arises (IE damaged, stripped etc)."
Oh gosh, no IMHO. Definitely one of those plastic items that will outlast any of us. What I have seen (and experienced) is that the plastic can get damaged when they're stuck on there quite tightly -- and removing them can be a PITA. If/when they get damaged, you can easily replace them. (Don't ask me how I know.)
Shortly after I bought my
2006 Cayman S
, I noticed a few oil droplets in the driveway. Turns out the former owner liked changing the oil on his own, over-torqued it, and gave it a hairline crack in the oil filter housing. So yeah, it can happen.
I've never replaced my filter housing in my 15 years of ownership, including around 20 DIY oil changes. So, like
@gubi
, l think this is a myth. But for full disclosure I bought a spin-on adapter for my next change mainly for simplicity and to avoid the mess I always make removing the large, oil filled housing. No way to lower it without slightly tipping it due to the frame cross-member directly behind it. And invariably a good deal of the spilled hot oil ends up on me.
I've gotten pretty good at not spilling oil if I can get the car high enough. Easier way is to just get a gallon ziplock bag, though. Put it up around the canister as you do the final unscrewing then all the drips go in the bag.
As a side comment, I just bought a couple of filters for my new '
25 Cayman
, and was surprised the entire housing (including filter element + O-ring) cost only 5 bucks more than the filter and O-ring alone ($26 vs $21), so bought one of those. I'll be nice not having to clean it.
I never scrutinized the housing on my ex-2016
981
, but just checked the new
718
housing, and there's nothing inside (just plastic). Maybe a different housing. At any rate, even if a spring is present for
981s
, it's not going to get weak unless we're talking maybe decades. But if the housing is as cheap as it is for
718s
, I'd change it every few years. Hope this helps.
I have examined the inside of the 987 filter housing and see no spring bypass assembly in it. The only time I replaced one was after an oil change, the housing was leaking, it apparently developed a tiny crack in the threaded area. New housing fixed the leak.
You dont visually see any "spring" but the valve is there and has been for many model years back. Its the thing in the bottom that the filter hole pops onto, and here is an article with images of the valve and how it works:
