So I'm down in Orlando on business and ran by Porsche of Orlando. Talked with a 996 owner who was a sales consultant there (Andreas Moraitis, would recommend him if you're in the market living around central FL). I took out a CS for a test drive and must say I was very impressed with the car and the sense of balance it had. My question was specific to the Cayman S engine. Is it the same engine as the 99-01 996? It is the same size, has the same bore x stroke, same compression, and about the same hp. I realize they might have changed the intake/exhaust manifolds, and timing but are they based off the same internals as the 996?
Thanks.
No, it is not - it's a different motor from the 1999-2001 996 cars... it also uses the cams and variable valve train from the 997.

Yes it is the same 3,4l engine. only some very minor changes (cayman less compressed/torque).
Except for turbo and GT models all engines (watercooled) since 1997 are based on the same engine block and built in the same line 2.7l - 3.8l.
The Cayman S engine is basically a 997 engine with a Boxster crankshaft. Think of it as a 997 that has been destroked to 3.4 L. The Cayman S pistons are new so that they will work correctly with the reduced stroke, and the compression ratio is slightly lower than the 997. The cams are the same as the 997, but the variocam timing settings are different. The exhaust is substantially different because it's a mid-engine instead of a rear engine, but the intake is similar. for a comparison of various Porsche engines. There is additional information in the "Files" section of the site, look for the "Cayman Product Information Guide" under Files/Cayman Documents/Information Guides.
Cool, yeah it felt a lot like the 996 engine/speed wise. I really liked the mid engine design as the back seats of a 911 are pointless. I know Porsche added the VarioCam plus. Still think the 911 is a better looking car and in the higher models, well that's obvious. I was really impressed with the CS however. As far as value, it is probably the best on the market. I'm trying to get a buddy of mine to buy one.
