Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.
Discussions that report identifying a cause

0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.
0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.
Reported cause
Turned out to be the exhaust/cat bracket under the number plate area was cracked through and the metal was chattering together under the engine vibration.
Leading evidence: 'exhaust/cat bracket' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'exhaust/cat bracket' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check alternator, water pump, idler pulleys etc' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Resolve by taking a good used clutch from a second hand Boxster compressor, which cost me £35.

Suggestion
Its worth dropping the belt off and checking alternator, water pump, idler pulleys etc to eliminate these.

Suggestion
Heat shields can make a lot of noise if they are loose, so def check those.

Suggestion
If you are used to doing engine work and can do so safely, you can use a stick or cut down broom handle (nothing that can fit in the ear!!!) touched against the block and moved around to pinpoint internal noises.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

After aweek of inactivity my C4S started as normal but there is a distinct rattle at idle.Oil is a touch lower on the internal guage but nothing major. It sounds like an over rev, stretched cam chain but can't because t's a tipronic. As it gets warmer it begins to sound like a bag of spanners.Obviously I'm bricking it as I don't have £12k but it could be a loose heat shield or why.
It was in the paint shop last week & I know they took it down the road for some reason but doubt they over did it.
Any idea's folks, be gentle
my 996 had a terrible rattle that made me think the car was finished. Turned out to be the exhaust/cat bracket under the number plate area was cracked through and the metal was chattering together under the engine vibration. Worth a check there?
Hi
From what you are saying the noise is a recent occurrence.
As for the over rev's these will be logged in the ECU. Yes its difficult to over rev a Tip but it can be done. Most code readers will read the over rev's.
As for the noise, does it increase in step with engine revs. They can have noisy lifters from cold but they tend to get quieter as the engine heats up. Also that is a tapping rather than "box of spanners". Heat shields can make a lot of noise if they are loose, so def check those.
If you are used to doing engine work and can do so safely, you can use a stick or cut down broom handle (nothing that can fit in the ear!!!) touched against the block and moved around to pinpoint internal noises. You can use a hose in a similar way pushed up under the bumper to hear if you can locate a rattle outside of the engine.
Best of luck, and a video of the noise would help. Noises from these engines are scary.
By the way, with issues like borescore you want to be looking for sooty exhaust tips as well as noise. Tiptronic cars are more prone to this phenomena.
All the best

Have you got PSE? The valve butterfly can get loose and rattle, or possibly the actuator has gotten loose.
I'm optimistic that if it gets worse when warm that it's hopefully something quite simple that rattles when the engine heats up and bits expand, eg exhaust clamp, heat shield etc.
Either way, I'd get it down to an Indy for diagnosis.
Fingers crossed.
The first thing to try is turning the AC on and off and trying it on both.
A knackered AC clutch will rattle badly. Mine did it as 120K.
Resolve by taking a good used clutch from a second hand Boxster compressor, which cost me £35.
Water pump failing also makes a horrible racket. Its worth dropping the belt off and checking alternator, water pump, idler pulleys etc to eliminate these.

You are the winner!
My Fabulous Indie, Andy Windsor at AWMotorsport in Southbourse, diagnosed it as a failing water pump that was ready to let go imminently so she's in now pending the work. I might take the opportunity to refresh the red coolant, LTT already done
Thank you
all
for your thoughts, I have a budget for maintenance but not for a £12k rebuild at the moment so was a bit concerned.
