Spare NO expense. All filters are NOT the same. I have cut many of them open and looked at the construction. Most filters are crap. A long, long time ago, I had 3 filters cut up on display in a NAPA store that I owned. All were for the same application. A WIX filter, a Pennzoil filter, and a Lee filter. The order of good to bad was WIX, Lee, Pennzoil. In fact, on a scale of 1-10, 10 being best, I would have rated the WIX 9, Lee, 7, and Pennzoil a 3 or maybe a 2. A 1 would be a roll of toilet paper, like in the real old 50s chevys. The cartridge filters that the 356 engines used were probably a 6, but Porsche also had the screen doing some work, and a magnetic plug, etc. The Pennzoil truck used to sell me cases of oil. I had to carry it, as customers wanted it. One day, he happened by with the regional manager for a ride along. The guy saw the display and said that wasn't their filter!!! I said that it most certainly was. I bought it at the drug store and would be happy to cut open another right there, right now, should he care to see ... The next month, Pennzoil changed their recommendation to replace the oil and filter to every 3,000 miles, rather than every 6,000 miles, as it currently was. Now, I'm not taking credit for that change (heck, they make more money that way), but I certainly wouldn't leave any of there filters on my car any longer than 1that, because I've seen the construction .... <div style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt">Since the advent of internet, there are endless the debate over oil filters, usefulness of KN air filter, auto vs. manual. Over these topics, everyone have a voice and everyone is an expert. If you post a question on oil filter, we have get 100 responses, but if you post a question of what pre-lube you should use when installing the piston in the engine; you will be luck if you get one reply.</div> <div style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt"></div> <div style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt">Yes, I have seen literally over hundred times that people cut up the filters and show which manufacture uses better material than others. However there is no correlation on the material or the construction of the filter with the longevity of the engine.Like vitamins, they are essential for good health. But if you live in the U.S. and eat balance diet, you don’t need to take daily vitamins. Therefore when patients often ask which Vitamin brands are better. I often use whatever oil filter or oil in the store at the time. Recently I pulled my BMW engine for rebuilding (she ran perfectly at the time I took her apart). The engine has 275K.When I inspect the cylinder wall, I can see the cross hatches. I bought this BMW 20 years ago and drove her hard as hell. Thanks folks. The 996 filters I bought some time ago were Porsche filters. I just wanted to verify what the Porsche p/n should be or if the p/n has been superceded. I don't think I'd use anything other than the P filter in the Cayman, but I'd use Mobil 1 filters in the other cars...../fckeditor/editor/images/smiley/MWPX/regular_smile.gif

POST 6Original post

Hey Conrad, FYI, Fram fiters are real good. Even though they sell them at drug stores. The old 356 Porsches used Fram too. What an oil filter is made of DOES effect the life expectancy of an engine, if allowed to stay in service too long. An oil filter (and air filter) have pleats. The more pleats, the more surface area, with which to pass oil. The more oil that can pass, ensures adequate volume flow, keeping the oil clean, and maintaining (by not impeding) the oil pressure flow to vital engine parts. The early canister filters didn't even have pressure flow; the oil and filter element sat in the canister together and whatever oil flowed through the element got some cleansing. It took about 500 miles to get all 6 quarts filtered just once. Think sludge buildup. Past the pleats, is the material composition, and then the kind of relief/bypass valve 'if' they actually chose to include one!! Some manufacturers us a quality media for filtering with a sealant that attaches the end caps to prevent oil from taking the least path of resistance and going back into the engine. The 'cheap' (not to be confused with inexpensive) filters use carbord ends attached to the 'cheap' paper filter media by prayer. After a few thousand miles, this stuff looks like pulp (or spitwads). Quality filters have better filter media, with more surface area, constructed to force the oil to pass through the media. And 'if' the media clogs, a foolproof relief valve, to permit the oil to get to the engine ... An inexpensive filter can be of good quality. And a cheap filter isn't always inexpensive. The only way that you can be certain that you are getting a quality filter is to cut one open. Its not the cylinder cross hatch that suffers so much. Its the rod and main bearings. They are softer and breakdown more. Edited by - fmarshall on 05/12/2006 08:52:30 AM

POST 7Original post

Why is the Toyota in the list ? Is Porsche and Toyota using the same OEM, and is it Toyota 4RUNNER[/quote] only or do other Toyota cars use it. How common is it between different car brands to have the same oil filter ? Would this be a cost saving measure or it just happened that the thread and size are the same ? I found the info about the air filter very interesting - I never paid much attention to it - can someone comment some more on how important the air filter would be and should a more frequent replacement cycle be used.

POST 8Original post

I'm going Canton Mecca. Google 'em if you care to. http://www.cmfilters.com/ Used them for years - amazed at how clean the oil stays. And yes, I 'over change' my oil and filters - no oil analysis or any of that - just makes me feel better. It is turely amazing the wild debates that flare up over things like oil, and filters... Pretty good link if you are interested. http://www.ntpog.org/reviews/filters/filters.shtml There are lots..... and 'other' http://www.trasko-usa.com/ http://neptune.spacebears.com/cars/stories/oil-life.html

POST 9Original post

kreggin - Your CM Oil Filters look very interesting. They seem to be off the scale in the filtration department. Have you check with them if they have the Cayman filter available? Also in the past when you’ve taken a car in for any service have they ever questioned you about the filter? Very tempting indeed zornet

POST 10Original post

I've never had a question on any of my cars over the filters from CM. I have it in the garage and will install in a few more miles - probably next few weeks. I'm still in early break in. The same part fits my TTR 225 by the way. I have not had the filter off the Cayman so this will be interesting. I'll let you know how it goes and post pictures. I'm not exactly sure untill I see it how a spin on replaces the existing unit so I have a Porsche replacement on hand also. CM does supply these for 911's and Boxters and I am told they use the same filter ( Porsche parts departmen locally said so ). I have used the slightly longer bodied units on a couple of cars that had the clearance. Adds a small additional oil volume, lots more filter area and more heat dissapation thru the body of the filter. When you hold on in your hand it looks like something that goes on an airplane or the space shuttle - very high quality.

POST 11Original post

kreggin - Looking forward on the results of your CM filter install, it looks to be one serious filter system. Thanks. zornet

POST 14Original post

I just received a new oil filter and the p/n is 996 107 225 60 instead of 996 107 225 53 I only found one other person that referenced this other p/n but no one confirmed that it was correct. I called Suncoast and they confirmed it was correct but I just don't want to try and use the wrong filter on my first oil change. Can anyone verify that the new p/n is 996 107 225 60 Thanks Frank
