Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.

a previous mechanic had used the cam sensor disc on the camshaft to turn it ..
Leading evidence: 'Use cam sensor disc' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Use cam sensor disc' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.
Source reports, not a diagnosis or a success probability. Counts refer to discussions and can overlap.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi there .. I just bought a 2000 C4... cam deviations are 7.5 and 1.31 ...
I know that Jake Raby in the States likes them addressed before they hit 6 and I think the Check Engine Light comes on at 9?
My mechanic said.. Oh dont worry -we can always put rails and address it..
But because I am such a newbie.... :?: ... I read this article and it seems that the work can be done without the engine out? Clutch RMS IMS and AOS and Coolant tank were done 2 years ago and I dont want to pull out the motor JUST FOR THAT!
Am I reading this article right or should i get ready for a heist?
I think it might be at 11 you will get an out of limit code .. i need to do some research on this particular model but basically the vario cam will compensate .. it moves plus or minus so can take up the slack to a degree .
There's a fair difference on the deviations you have for chain stretch .. but either way you don't currently have an issue .
I need to do some digging .. a note has been made .. FIR is required .
Further Investigation Required .
Ok so ...
Camshaft can move by 20 degrees each way so 40 degrees of movement are possible .. i'm pretty sure you won't get an eml until it hits 11 degrees or more .
The bit that's confusing me .. if you had a stretched timing chain then both deviations would be similar but a degree or two less on B2 ..
I would be interested to know if the car has had an engine strip or something done that involves the camshafts over the last 5 years ..
The reason .. i've seen a car with high deviations that actually were not high .. a previous mechanic had used the cam sensor disc on the camshaft to turn it .. this resulted in it moving and giving a false reading .
In your position the first thing i would have checked is do the cams time up with the tools on both banks .. then go from there .
Can you share the article about swapping the sliders without pulling the motor? I'm tempted to do that job in the next few months. I've read a post on here by CSR about how he did it but more viewpoints always welcome!
I know it's relatively easy on a 986 but the chassis leg must really get in the way on the 996...
