Infront of passenger side cam cover so the guys at tech9 dropped the oil, replaced whatever gasket and had me on my way within a couple of hours which was a nice surprise.

Long time no see everyone, the 996 has barely done any miles same as most during covid, but it's developed a suspected valve cover leak on the passenger side which has got worse so it's going in for reseal next week.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

6 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Long time no see everyone, the 996 has barely done any miles same as most during covid, but it's developed a suspected valve cover leak on the passenger side which has got worse so it's going in for reseal next week. It seemed a little low on oil the other week so topped up but realised I put too much in, so dropped some out tonight to correct and found these black plastic shavings in the dropped oil which was obviously from the bottom of the oil pan which had been sitting a while. No sparkling metal or anything really nasty so I'm guessing the hard black plastic shavings are chain guides? 97k on the 1999 3.4.

POST 2Original post

Black plastic will be chain or IMS chain guards / guides .. soft black rubber will be silicone sealant . I doubt there is an issue .

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Awesome 👍 thanks demort, I'll sleep soundly tonight 😴

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Had the leak fixed, turned out the cam covers was only really sweating, it was a good ol' drip coming from chain tensioner housing? Infront of passenger side cam cover so the guys at tech9 dropped the oil, replaced whatever gasket and had me on my way within a couple of hours which was a nice surprise. Then one wiper arm fell off its spindle rather comically on the way back, stupid car.

POST 5Original post

Can these hard chain guide shavings can get round the engine and potentially restrict or block oil circulation? Could the oilflow to the Crank be impacted ?Hard to immagine the shavings would all head conveniently to the sump. Disclosure: I am not an engine expert!

POST 6Original post

Oil in the sump goes through the oil filter before it enters the oilways .. the plastic is in the sump and would not go past the mesh filter on the oil pump intake let alone the oil filter. Sensible question though and happy to answer .
