Does anyone know why my 07 manual pgs 191 and 302 give the weight limit as 132lbs for the roof rack and the
Porsche
site says you can put 165lbs on it?
Does
porsche
.com say you can put 165lb on it when it's on a
Cayman
? The same rack is used on the 997. And I think the big roof box ("Roof Box 2" IIRC) that would mechanically mount, is intended only for the Cayenne. Mainly -- don't trust Tequipment listings regarding model-specific limits. On
porsche
.com, and on
Suncoast
and Carlsen's sites, there's a lot of careless cut-and-pasting.
I can't explain the discrepancy. However, I can tell you that I've been using the
Porsche
roof rack to support a plywood platform on which I attach my four track tires and wheels. I've driven 400 miles each way to and from the track with this system and I have not experienced any problems with the rack or the roof mounts. The total load on the rack is close to 165 pounds.
Them's mighty light track wheels and tires, jonathan. What are they?
Yes, the roof rack for the
Cayman
is rated at 165lbs on the website. And I've weighed stock wheeks with hoosier race tires at 42fr/45rr, so 174lbs all in. So if 165 is OK, I'll assume the factor of safety covers 174.
Jim Michaels: I use BBS RS-GT 18" wheels and Toyo RA-1 tires. Iweighed them last fall. I can't remember the exact numbers, but I was very close to 165 lbs. including the plywood platform and hardware.
Thanks, jonathan.
For those considering the roof rack for their OEM wheels and tires (or with
Michelin
Cup tires), the set would weigh about 20# more than jonathan's. With the GB RAC Monolites and 235/265
Michelin
Cups, the weights would be back down to about 165#. There's probably some safety margin beyond 165#, but I wouldn't want to test to find it on my own car.
I did a bit of investigating, and found that the
Porsche
website for other countries/regions (mideast, austrailia, etc) gives the roof rack rating as 60kg/132lbs, while the American site rates the apparently identical (same part #) unit at 75kg/165lbs! Go figure.
Everything here is getting devalued.
