Have to drop the front subframe, and the metal coolant hoses under the car - I separated them at the rubber hose at the front of the car and dropped them out of the way replaced the coolant.

So the cost to me is £1250 extra because the the feed and return connections were corroded on due to dissimilar metals, and both pipes were damaged while removing them - They were solid, but ffs they are expensive and appears there is no repair kit on the market?

If your just replacing the metal rack pipes there £50 ish that's what I had but tried to take the rack out without dropping the subframe but I hadn't counted on the corrosion between the expensive length of the car pipes and the rack - left alone I am sure they would of done a few more years.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

So if your pipes on the rack have corroded through ( like mine were ) Rather than remove the rack to change the pipes, drop the Subframe and unbolt the rack but leave the flexible lines connected and change them while under the car. Here's the thing, I didn't do that and working on your back on the floor rather than standing under a ramp, well the idea came too late. So the cost to me is £1250 extra because the the feed and return connections were corroded on due to dissimilar metals, and both pipes were damaged while removing them - They were solid, but ffs they are expensive and appears there is no repair kit on the market?

POST 2 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Plus I went to one dealer for the pipes, in person and wasn't overly impressed, with the parts service, and postage of the pipes was going to to be impossible anyway by chance decided they would be easier to collect from another dealer, so I called this time, and who just said he would post them for £10. I won't name the first, but hats off to the Bristol Porsche dealer for service

POST 3Original post

VERY interesting as I'm about to do the VERY same job on mine. I'm buying a scissor lift (always wanted one), and the quoted price of £1.2k in labour alone has forced the decision - especially as I've got the metal pipes PLUS I get a "free" scissor lift out of it Would love to pick your brains on process either here or on PM though Dan edited to add that I'm sure the £12.k labour is right - it looks like a big job if you're taking everything out etc. I just reckon I can put the money to better use

POST 4Original post

Maybe I'm missing something, but there are recent posts on here about aftermarket power steering pipes...some chap had them made in a town that had a strange name and began with B... Also, someone posted re this place http://www.powersteeringstore.co.uk/porsche-911-power-steering-rack-pipes-(1998-2005)?search=Porsche Are these the pipes you damaged?

POST 5Original post

I *might* be able to chime in here - there are a BIG set of pipes that you "only get from Porsche" (they're also on Design911!) - they are EXPENSIVE. They're long and run the length of the car from the steering pump in the engine bay to the front. They are WELL known for seizing onto the rack (differing metals) and they invariably need to be "convinced" to be removed. Permanently. Despite this seizing, they don't really go, although on a 20-yr old car, they can fail. What DOES fail are the metal pipes you mention that cross the top of the steering rack. They're pretty cheap - I couldn't find the guy who did them for £30-odd, so I paid Design911 £50 and they gave me some free sweets But those pipes corrode quite badly. TBF they're only cheap brake-line pipe by the looks of it. The Design911 ones are black powder-coated ones - looking a little more durable imho. Dan

POST 6Original post

When I removed the PS pipes on Pinky the issue I had was trying to undo the joint half way down the passenger side from under the car. It was not for giving up. I need to do these on my C4 cab as the ferrules are gone, as is common, and not entirely happy with the jubilee clip fix, although it has been fine on my C2 for years. I'll be posting more info on that. Lucky for me the pipes I took off Pinky only did a few hundred miles, so that will save me a ton of money. MC

POST 7Original post

I'm assuming that's me. I had mine sorted by a hydraulic place in Ballymena, local town to me in northern Ireland. My fittings at he rack were fine, what I was doing was fitting a front mount electric power steering pump, this getting rid of all the pipework and rear mounted engine driven pump. I cut the pipes and had them fit a union and another in the frunk at the trw pump. I have had a teething issue though, the fitting at the pump has a leek, I'd guess mainly because I had to try and shape the pipe to fit in a right space. I need to get another Vauxhall pipe and have a union fitted but this time, I'll shape the pipe first to save any undue stress. Things ya learn as you go.

POST 8Original post

No it wasn't Ballymena! That is a normal name to me. It was a very English village name - like Six mile Bottom or Peas Pottage! I'll have to google it. It was in the midlands near Derby I think

POST 9Original post

Boreal Common! http://911uk.com/viewtopic.php?t=142882&highlight=steering Thread mentions dropping the subframe partially too.

POST 10Original post

I think the firm you are looking for is PIRTEK. they are national so you should find one within your locale. They fix our excavators at work Good company Ray

POST 11Original post

https://wooliesworkshop.com/product...MIwPvK8ZL18gIVt4BQBh2SogUHEAQYASABEgIYlvD_BwE I think you mean here.. I got mine from Woolie's workshop and I'm sure they were in Balsall Heath in Birmingham.. Address is now Solihull.. £49 inc vat.. think they were the cheapest.. Design911 were £52 plus vat

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

So does anyone have an information on accessing the power steering pipes where they join the back of the car? Pipes just arrived £911 plus VAT so £1100 some German sense of humour there. If your just replacing the metal rack pipes there £50 ish that's what I had but tried to take the rack out without dropping the subframe but I hadn't counted on the corrosion between the expensive length of the car pipes and the rack - left alone I am sure they would of done a few more years. I was going to do the metal pipes on the bench, had I of just dropped the subframe that would of been a very easy job and I could of changed the pipes leaving the rack attached to the steering column.

POST 13 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Got the main flow and return Power Steering pipes changed - very easy Undo the connection except it's a push fit, so you only undo so you can remove the star grip then it just falls off. Have to drop the front subframe, and the metal coolant hoses under the car - I separated them at the rubber hose at the front of the car and dropped them out of the way replaced the coolant. Ran out of time, doing this plus nearly 8h round trip, to get there and back more CHF 11 needed, and probably some more Tiptronic fluid

POST 14 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Ok finally my dad grabbed the CHF and topped up the Power steering fluid - only now I don't have any power steering - any ideas? By that I mean is there anything special required on a 996 that you wouldn't do on any other car. Or any common failures after changing PS pipes I am thinking it has to be a pump failure.

POST 15Original post

Can you do a recap here as i'm a little confused .. you have replaced the steering rack pipes and you now have no power steering assist ie it feels like the pump isn't working ? pas pump .. low fluid and it will whine .. very loud .. you add more fluid until it goes quiet .. this is down to air bubbles ... for the pump to not be working i would question has the pipe replacement been correct or is it possible some pipes have been mixed up :dont know: Pumps don't tend to stop working as it's mearly 2 gears meshing together and squeezing fluid into a pipe . Confused atm .
