Suggestion

In the future when you are going to disconnect the power steering lines it helps to drop the engine down a few inches to create some space to get your wrenches in there to have better leverage.

I only need to replace the tensioner assembly and need access to that bolt.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I've got an engine in my garage from my 2000. It had a failure (evidence suggests d-chunk), and it has been taking up a lot of floor space. So, I've started to disassemble it - first removing all of the bolt on items at the top of the engine. I am a bit stumped by a bolt on the power steering pump. It is the right rearmost bolt, and it is in a position where there isn't any clearance to get a socket on it. I can get the open end of a combination wrench on it, but because of the castings around it, there isn't room to rotate it. There must be some tip or trick to it. If you've seen this before, could you share any advice? Thanks!

POST 2Original post

Challenges! Socket and swivel and come in from behind? Or a racheting combination wrench with fine teeth? Or remove the pipe from the power steering pump above?

POST 3Original post

If memory serves, you need to remove the pump from the bracket first before you can remove the bracket from the engine block.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks Ahsai, you posted it as I was doing it. I provided some more info below for the next person to search this. Turns out it is neither complicated, nor interesting. Remove the pulley (3 bolts), remove the power steering hose (1 17mm nut), remove the bolts holding the tensioner (2 allen bolts) [to get wiggle room - may not be necessary], remove the three bolts toward the rear of the engine (they are holding the power steering pump to the cast bracket), remove the power steering pump out toward the front of the car. Now access to that remaining bolt is easy, in fact, Porsche engineering designed a hole through the top of the cast bracket to make the approach with a tool easier (probably for assembly purposes, but it works for disassembly too). Watch out for all the CHF11S that comes pouring out (even though you sucked a ton out with a syringe).

Question if the front line is loose and the pump bolts removed can you get to that tensioner assembly bolt? I only need to replace the tensioner assembly and need access to that bolt. Maybe @Porschetech3 has some good tips.

POST 6Original post

If you want the big bracket off that holds the PS Pump and the Tensioner Assembly, there are no short cuts here... following the procedure is the only way...

No i am looking to remove the belt tensioner assemble that's one the backside of that bracket. That tensioner has two Allen head bolts on the back and one is near the oil filler neck and the other the PS pump slightly blocks.

POST 8Original post

In the future when you are going to disconnect the power steering lines it helps to drop the engine down a few inches to create some space to get your wrenches in there to have better leverage. I would save those until you are about to drop the engine and disconnect them last, it makes it a lot easier. Edit - I did not realize this engine was NOT in the car, I just saw power steering and had Vietnam style flashbacks of trying to disconnect them before lowering the engine slightly. Reading comprehension skills lol

Yeah I wouldn't even think about trying to remove the tensioner without removing the bracket first... Too much hassle ..Just remove the bracket then remove the tensioner... its not that bad if your just follow proceedure ...
