So.... my questions is, I see companies online offer replacement cdr24s with Protect mode cleared and claim that these are
plug
and play ready. Can someone confirm with 100% confidence if such a radio would still need to be coded at the dealer to the car or not?
Also what about a
Bose amp
? Do those need to be coded or can just just buy a used one and
plug
it in (assuming same vintage
Bose
set up of course)?
I am on the same boat! my CDR took a dumb I bought a used radio and now its in protect mode. I haven't gone to the dealer to see how much they would charge me.
i bought my radio off ebay
Try
Becker Autosound
out of New Jersey. I bought a reconditioned
CDR24
off them last year. They are helpful, and they give your discount if you send back your old (non functional) unit. The only issue I had was that when it arrived, I hooked it up and it didn’t work. I had to take it to a shop who informed me that the fuse in the head unit itself was blown (thanks Becker for costing me $200 to get that checked).
The other issue I had is that my unit powers on, but there is no volume. Dealer said it was likely the amplifier, which I now intend to replace. Becker does offer either a six-month or one-year warranty (I cant’ recall which) but they are generally helpful if something is not going right.
You do not need to marry the unit to the car, like you would a new key. It is
plug
-and-play on the 987s. I have read some other posts about members who have gone through multiple amps, so that may be an issue as well.
Hope this helps!
If anyone needs a CDR-24 and/or a
bose AMP
, PM me. I just replaced these with an aftermarket unit and amp
In case anyone has trouble removing the amp, it’s not very intuitive. In my car
987.1
(
Boxster S
) it’s secured by metal clips (one large one on one side, two smaller ones on the other). You release it by bending the large clip and sliding it backwards. The screws (Torx) are for opening up the case of the amp, not for removing it... The shop kept telling me to “remove the screws at the corner”, but those undo the amp itself (not what you want). Hope this saves you some time!
