I pulled my cable out toward the rear of the tail light fixture opening and then used duct tape to secure it there so that it could just be fished out with a small hook if ever needed.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

4 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I couldn't find the answer after some searches here, on Google, etc. Apologies if this has already been answered somewhere. I'm curious where the emergency, manual trunk release cable should be on a 2004 C4S. Is there one for the front only, or also for the engine lid? On my 986, I ended up re-routing the front cable to the tow hook location. Is the front cable on a 996 in the passenger wheel well also? Is there a rear cable too? On my 986 the actuator for the front trunk failed and having the cable was hugely important (since it wasn't a simple matter of jumping a dead battery), so I like to be prepared Thanks!

POST 2Original post

The front cable is inside the upper front passenger side fender liner, unless someone has moved it. You can see it with the right front headlight assembly removed. The rear cover cable is under the left rear tail light fixture. The problem is that it cannot be accessed that way because the light fixture cannot be opened (by a single nut) unless the rear engine cover is already open. I pulled my cable out toward the rear of the tail light fixture opening and then used duct tape to secure it there so that it could just be fished out with a small hook if ever needed. Some folks pull it out the bottom near the left part of the exhaust system. Good luck.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks 88... this helps a lot. Very strange they made the rear cable inaccessible if the lid is shut. Not sure I understand the thinking there. Any idea what the rational was? Oh well, thanks again!

POST 4Original post

You can fish the rear cable out with a thin wire hook and a rubber spatula gently wedged between the light assy and bumper. Sometimes you can see/fish the front one through the marker light hole. It just snaps out.(the marker light)

This is a source reference. Confirm exact model applicability in the original material.
