I don't know how much different the 987 is from the 981 but on the 981 you can set the language on the multifunction display deep into the date/time settings menu.

987.2. Got car back from dealer recently and now everything is in German. I can’t find the setting to get it back to English. Is this a scanner only change?

Did you try resetting the computer? From the stalk on the left side of the steering wheel, go to "SET" then "BASIC SETTING". I have no clue if that will work but it is worth a shot.
