The "city lights" serve as parking lights, and as daylight running lights--when the light switch is moved to the 1 o'clock position.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I do not like the fog lights. I do not like where they are located, I do not like thier shape, I do not like thier color.
How come they are on when I turn on the headlights? I do not pull the light switch knob out. Its simply turned all the way to the right, but thge fog lights are on but dimmed! I hate it!
1- I want them off till I pull the knob!
2- Why are they on (dimmed)?
the dimmed look is from a second small bulb in the fog light assembly commonly refered to as the "city" light. You can remove the small bulb from each fog light unit if you want without harm or error code. Or, you can change to a bulb that better matches the Xexon light--order Philips H6W blue-white (Google it). Bright fog lights only come on when you pull-out the light switch one click. If you do not like the color of the yellowish fog lights, change them to Hoen H11 Xenon-match bulbs (Google it). If you do not like the "spears" holding the fog lights, change them to black, unpainted light spears available from
Suncoast
Porsche
or some other dealer. Instruction for removing spears and changing bulbs are in your owners manual. Stop whining.
copeland, im not whining, im blatantly complaining/expressing my opinions about the car. Or do some of us "believe"we own the perfect car?
Thanks for the info though. I will definitely pull the "city lights"out.
Any concerns on doing the above? WhaT purpose does the city light function serve?
I must admit that I'm not the biggest fan of the "dimmed" fog lights when you turn the headlights on, but it doesn't bother me to the point where I feel the need to pull the city lights bulb.
I gotta ask, how many of you have mirrors in your garage to look at the front of your car when you turn the lights on, or how many of you are letting others drive your car while you stand and look at the lights? I find it pretty simple, turn on the lights and if I want fog lights pull out one click, that is how Porsches have worked for some time.
I like the "spear" fog lights. I prefer them to the 997 look. I like the location and I don't have a problem with them On and dimmed.
Different strokes for different folks
My car is speed yellow on the inside too. My point is how do you know if your fog lights are on high or not? You really don't unless you get out and look. Pulling out on the control knob puts them in high mode, I do that as standard practice. What I don't understand is why you feel pulling out on the knob is burden? That is standard
Porsche
controls fair going back at least a decade if not longer. If you despised the fog lights so much why buy the car? Your first post makes it seems as if the car is fatally flawed, which in my opinion it isn't. I seldom notice my fog lights, on or off, maybe it is all of the yellow blinding me and I just don't see them anymore.
As other pointed out you can paint spears black, you can swap front bumpers to some aftermarket or
911
bumper and do away with them...
Ken,
I dont think my first post makes it seem like the car is severely flawed. The first post expresses how much I despise the
fog lights
and only the
fog lights
. The second expression is about my confusion about why the lights were dimmed (explained they're called city lights, which thier function still confuses me).
Pulling the knob action doesnt bother me, its not awkard or invoncenient(a lot of cars are like that). I simply dislike the look of fogs on a Porsche and in particular the "VW beetle-lookalike fogs"on the CS. So in my case I either have it rather shitty (city lights on by force) or very shitty by having the full fledged fogs on. I prefer rather shitty to very shitty
Ill prolly end up painting the spears black when I get the car serviced.
Relax man
I love my car but simply hate the fogs. Weighing all the positive attributes against all the negative attributes (lack of HP + fog lights and other minor misc. items) yeiled a definite "buy the CS- it kicks a lot of ***, in fact all the ***".
I actually like the fogs on my previous
Boxster
more. They just seemed to be a bit more timeless/classic look to them, but I don't mind the
Cayman
either.

, Dont know who the poor kid is, found the image on the net
What do you mean kick them? Disable them? Thats what im tryin to find out, how to disable city lights (dimmed mode) without having to take the bulbs out.
Interpol
, wheres the big deal? Did I say im not going to drive the car anymore or say im selling it coz of the fogs? This forum is great on finding solutions, I knew someone would know what the dimmed lights are and how to disable them.
hawc
, I agree and feel the same. The current Boxster lights are way nicer than the Caymans'. I avoided saying that because of fear of getting flamed from all the extremely-die-hard Cayman ONLY fans on this board (not everyone though
).
Sorry, but when you use words like
'hate'
and
'despise'
in your posts to describe something, one can't help but get the impression it's a big deal to you. Additionally, when you're willing to go so far as to pull the silly city lights out of their sockets just so they don't turn on, it's obviously more than just an annoyance. You don't have to go so far as to say you're going to sell the car because of the fogs, but your demeanor certainly gives that impression.
I just don't understand why this bothers you so much that you're willing to go to such lengths to disable them - especially when you can't even SEE the lights on when you're driving, which is what counts. My guess is you're really, really concerned about what people on the street are thinking when gawking at your car while you're driving it - which says quite a bit about your ego than anything about the car's aesthetics. You don't have to blatantly say it.
By the way, my original recommendation still stands - find yourself a nice third party front bumper without foglight housings and you'll be happy. It's the only solution if you 'despise' them that much.
