So I’d be picking an either a Carrera 2, Carrera 2S, Carrera T or a GTS and probably the 991.2 Generation where you’d get a really special one for your budget.

If you want a sports exhaust, the sound is probably an important factor, in which case I'd be staying away from 991.2 cars and be looking at a 991.1 S or GTS which has the 3.8 litre normally aspirated engine.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I’m still getting used to it and am loving it so far.
Looking for a bit of a sanity check.
Fortunate enough after a lot of saving and a big toy clear out to finally scratch that itch iv had since being a teenager and get myself in a 911.
I started looking at 997.1 rebuilds and as always the scope creeps and at the moment even a 992S from porsche direct is slipping into budget (although base spec)
Only must haves are the full 4 seats (3 & 6 year old) and sports exhaust - my inner 18year old trying to get out. If an older car I think id prefer a manual but not hard fast. if a 997 not the 2S as much prefer the wide body
Im sliding towards a 991.2 GTS where i can get one in my budget now but then start worrying about having to replace the turbos.
This is a weekend car, road trip and possibly a few days out to Oulton park.
Where would your money go?, I want to get the right one and keep for a long time!
Hummm
Thanks for the replies so far
Research put me off a 991 Turbo to be honest due to the reviews just refering to its streight line speed, also its 70-80k on a 10 year old car and the prospective imminent maintenance.
I did spot this at the top of the budget,

If you want a sports exhaust, the sound is probably an important factor, in which case I'd be staying away from 991.2 cars and be looking at a 991.1 S or GTS which has the 3.8 litre normally aspirated engine. Without turbos you'll have that delicious induction sound and with PSE you'll have the best exhaust sound. I say this as the auditory experience is the thing that really gets me fired up above all else. I don't care if a car with a turbo is faster, I'll choose the slower one which sounds better. But there are no slow 911s.
I'm not a big fan of white cars or black wheels, but something like this:
https://www.ashgood.co.uk/vehicle-details/used-por...
or this:
https://www.ashgood.co.uk/vehicle-details/used-por...
I'm picking Ashgood as they are local to me and from personal experience a very pleasant company to buy a car from.
I’ve got a 991.2GTS, had a 991.1 GTS before.
The 991 is great, not too old and plenty quick, with modern enough toys. Looked at 992, just can’t see what I get extra that I feel is justified in terms of costs tbh.
My ideal? Probably 991.1GTS manual. I went from PDK to manual on the change and it’s brilliant. But do miss the noise of the NA engine, even if the Turbo unit is rapid.
Try a few differing eras etc, one will be yours.
A nice problem to try and solve! Enjoy it.
How about this bit of a unicorn with manual, did fancy it myself but not a fan of the wheels and really needs sports exhaust.

The colour? I can't imagine owning a dark green Porsche unless it was a Cayenne or something! I'm sure some people will like it but it's very divisive.

I had not spotted that, I quote like it! Would the brakes put you off ?
Got ceramics on mine, while I wouldn’t have sprung for the cost from new the stopping power is immense.
As long as you keep out of the kitty litter, if on track, and don’t break hard on gravel drives I can’t see much downside tbh.

The only downside is the potential for a very, very large 5 figure bill at some point.

Its got your name on it! Better than the 992 White in my opinion - that flat white is like a refrigerator on wheels. You've waited this long since a kid for a 911, go a bit special.
Re brakes - if it all goes pear shaped then one could consider Surface Transforms
https://rpmtechnik.co.uk/blog/surface-transforms/
or a PPCB to Steal Brake conversion
Use the concern in your negotiating - that is the car for you. Its HQ's history and unicorn status makes it a special one at that price.

Don’t know, never had to on mine.

Tbh I didn’t believe in unicorns until I actually seen one and took a picture…..,,,
EDIT TO THIS
Just had a look at the above gts, didn’t realise the discs and calipers were as big tbh, deffo a chance of stones snagging between calipers and inner barrel on those..

GT3.? There’s a nice red one at Cambridge for a few k over budget. Or do they not have back seats?

Not at all PCCB are brilliant and a bonus. That GTS is lovely.

Aftermarket ceramics supply only are £13500, steel disks and pads c. £700 - that’s quite a difference
I’ve had them on all but one of my new 911s since the early 2000s, with no issues only the benefits.
Each generation has been improved and I don’t see how anyone could incur those costs.
In road use the discs should last 100k++ mls and ‘damage’, as has been said on here before, should be covered under insurance.
Granted, extensive ‘track use’ may warrant other considerations.
All of the options are quick enough. For me, it would be a 991.1 GTS in manual.
Characterful engine for which the GTS required a lot of reworking (as opposed to software on the turbos). Great noise, modern enough (I’m not hugely into the interior tech side, you may think differently), and I much prefer the looks of the 991 over the 992.
You’ll have tonnes of performance, yet you’ll need to work the engine for it - so you’ll enjoy the engine scream and NA characteristics more than the extremely capable point and squirt turbos of 991.2 onwards.
I have a 991.1 3.8 pdk. Truly enjoyable. Pliable enough for the road, fast enough to be fun - with the PSE it sounds great. I would have liked manual, but could not find one with a decent spec.
Thought about GT3, but not sure it would be better as a road car. Thought about a Turbo S, but I like going round corners for fun, more than just for speed.
Each to their own and as someone said, the great thing is, there are no wrong choices here!

It’s
very
green and not sure it works that well with the privacy glass and black wheels.
One could say that about any colour. It’s very blue, very yellow, it’s very white, it’s very red.
FWIW I just picked up a 991.2 Targa 4 GTS PDK after 10 years of manual V8 Vantages. I’m still getting used to it and am loving it so far. The turbo engine and pdk are very different from the big V8s in the manual Vantages but boy is it quick and the front end is so light and accurate after the Astons.
I tend to drive with the Sport exhaust active all the time and more often than not also sport mode for the pops and bangs on the overrun. It’s still a little quiet for me after V8s but it’s fun trying something new.
I didn’t set out to buy a GTS. I was looking for a targa and the right spec came up and happened to be a GTS which was a bonus. Agate grey and red leather interior does it for me.
Good luck with your search. The green car looks pretty sweet.

That’s the car to have.
At that money I’d be looking for a 991 Turbo. 997 GTS’ are silly money, and to my mind overpriced.
Whilst you’ve looked at 997.1 and are worried about scope creep with regards repairs, you aren’t going to get 40k of scope creep. But the car definitely won’t feel as modern as say, a 991. That might be a plus, might be a minus depending on your perspective.
So, realistic choices:
991.1 Turbo
991.2 GTS
991.1 GTS if you must have naturally aspirated
997.2 S if can live without wide body
And so on.

Sorted.
Nice colour. In principle, a 991 GTS is a tempting thing but the turbos will dampen down the sound somewhat.
It's hard to both quantify and explain, and I have no idea why it's only with Porsches because if you take, say, a Golf GTI and put a proper exhaust on it, you don't have the issue with the noise (or lack thereof).
So without a proper exhaust and with two turbos attached to the boxer engine, you get a variation on a theme of sporty old VW Beetle.
WITH a proper exhaust and two turbos, it becomes a loud, boomy sound with a bit more of an interesting exhaust note but still underwhelming.
Videos cannot convey how rubbish 911s with turbos sound with a proper exhaust.
I admit this is proper geeking out on something inconsequential but I think the sound is part of the experience.

I see your point . 997 GTS sounds better— alas creature comforts , noise pollution laws , car regulations , conformity with all being the mantra , the middle ground being touted as the future in all things —I am sure all understand . Just the way the cookie is crumbling now sadly , FWIW I do like a proper sound
As others have said, my choice at this price point would be a 991.2 GTS.
In fact that’s exactly what I bought. I was prepared to spend more on a 992, but having driven both generations, couldn’t really see the point. I also slightly prefer the looks inside and out of the 991, but that is obviously subjective.
The green one on the earlier link looks nice, and would be pretty exclusive.

I bought a manual 991.2 GTS in the spring via OPC for that sort of money & absolutely love it. It’s pre 2018 so doesn’t have GPF so I’m told, but post April 2017 so cheap road tax (purely by accident).
Get one with a reversing camera as with those wide hips, very difficult to judge what’s behind. The std 4 way seats are very comfortable IMHO. Have got rear steer which I was ambivalent about but now wouldn’t be without, ditto sunroof. Have got PDCC but that needs really smooth road surface. The std ride is very good though am considering a DSC V3 PASM controller.

Dagnammit. I swore I copied the right URL. I'll have to find a 997 GTS exhaust vid later.
As I said before, the 991.1 GTS doesn't have a turbo, so for me that's the pinnacle of modern 911 without going with a hardcore GT3. 3.8-litre normally aspirated flat six, no turbo, PSE and manual would make the ideal car for me. I have a 981S with pretty much the same spec although with a smaller 3.4L engine but it sounds fabulous.
Here's a couple of Henry Catchpole EVO videos focusing on the sound of the Cayman and Boxster GTS. The 991.1 GTS will sound very similar. If you're not a fan of the pops and bangs on the overrun, they can be reduced massively by not pressing the sport button.
Boxster GTS video also with a great example of the sound:

First thing I’d say is try your children in the back of a 911. They are cosy at best.
I was in a similar position to you, but without the need for rear seats, and bought a 991.1 GTS in Targa flavour.
The N/A GTS is a superb car. Very useable and calm in normal mode with a nice growl above 3k revs. The noise in sport mode is fabulous. Really barks as the revs rise and just keeps accelerating faster and faster.
The.2 is even faster and more modern tech but I’d miss the noise and the power delivery of the N/A. No turbos to worry about and potentially a future classic sealed the deal.
Whatever you choose, get on and do it. Brilliant cars.

From personal experience I wouldn't be requiring 4 seats. In a couple of years the kids won't fit and you'll be using it at the weekend as a two seater anyway , with one kid in the front while you ferry them to one activity and the other being taken to another activity by your other half!
So, in your shoes I'd be looking at a Cayman GT4 or saving more for a 991.2 GT3. I love my GT4, but I had a go in a .2 GT3 at the weekend - absolutely epic, I want one for sure, but will wait a while longer as the OPC and I were 10k apart on the cost to change...
I disagree with the comments about getting a 2 seater, with a 3 and a 6 year old a 911 is usable for weekend trips, breaks and holidays - whilst a 2 seater will just end up in the garage at all those times.
I’d get a 992 with a warranty, I’d be wary of any cab or targa as the rear seat space is compromised. A ‘2’ often has a larger luggage space.
Nothing much else out there with a 2+2 configuration, only an i8, m4, gtr, lc500, continental. Of those perhaps an i8 is as interesting.
I’m a serial 911 owner and have had most of the different models from the 997 onwards, including GT3, RS’s and Turbos.
Your budget will probably buy you the best Porsche 911 in terms of bang for buck. My opinions are going to be quite controversial for some.
The GT3’s are great, but a massive compromise, and of course they don’t have 4 seats - which are very useable for children and even adults for short distances in the Coupe. The convertibles lose some space and the seats are very upright. The Turbos are ballistic, but aren’t any more fun and they are all 4WD in the recent generations.
The PDK box is brilliant, so unless you absolutely have to have a manual, which isn’t that great in the 7 speed used in the 991 and 992, choosing the PDK is the better option.
The best 911 is the one that you will actually use a lot, rather than a garage queen that GT cars tend to be. So I’d be picking an either a Carrera 2, Carrera 2S, Carrera T or a GTS and probably the 991.2 Generation where you’d get a really special one for your budget.
I also think that with each generation they got better and the 3.0 Turbo engine is a peach. Now the colour is a bit subjective but something like this appeals -
https://finder.porsche.com/gb/en-GB/details/7927X6
They’re (relatively) cheap to run, don’t depreciate as much as some other cars, the Porsche warranty is also really good, so it’s well worth buying from an OPC for peach of mind or a reputable Indy who will pay to put the proper Porsche warranty on.
For many buyers, the whole
raison d’être
of the core ‘911’s’, since the ‘60s, has been the compact packaging and day-to-day usability and practicality.
And the rear mounted engine, specifically allowing occasional folding rear seats - that do work - has always been a part of that identity.

The ultimate practical sports car.
We went to Le Mans as a family many times, when my son out grew the back seat, my wife went in the back. Although to be fair only for a few hours and never again
Does a 991.1 with PDCC have PASM as well?
When you press the 'PDCC button', that effectively turns on PASM, right? As PDCC is always active as I understand it.
Looks fantastic, enjoy. I hope to see it at Oulton one day. I’m still a bit chicken to go 911 there, so I thrash around in my cliosport. It is my intention to start using the 911 for track days and maybe go GT3 one day when the kids are too big for the back.
Great looking car. I am sure you will love it.
I have also been contemplating the same decision for a few months and ended up going the Turbo S route. They are all fantastic variations of an amazing car.

As one of the most pleasurable threads I have taken part in... I wanted to bring it to a close!
Car collected Friday, great experience from Porsche Silverstone.
250 miles in and loving it, only worry being I am struggling with the perfect position with the seats as im getting lower back pain after a few hours but it seems this is common from a google and I just need to experiment, winding the lumbar support fully off seems to help but I need to do a longer drive to see if its done the trick.
Only mods planned are the grills, wired optimate and a wireless carplay adaptor. Other than that its perfect.
Had a quick trip to halfords to get some seats that fit, but those screams when you boot it

Congrats to your new toy which looks stunning!
Have the same issue with back pain in the Porsche sofas in my wife's car. No issue even after going 5+ hours non-stop in any of the bucket seats in my GT3s
My friend has the same problem as the OP with the same
Budget.
Rather and starting a new thread I thought it would be prudent to use this one as most people will have an alert to this and they were helpful to the OP.
The GTS that was found on page one was a beauty, can anyone find a car at the at that budget, that gives the best Pound for Pound value?
Which car for £80k out there is the best - what can you find?

Congratulations, and excellent choice of colour.
The seats: I had exactly this issue with mine (991.1). I usually favour a quite high upright and forward position, at least until I am bedded into the car. With mine though the discomfort meant accelerating my acquaintance and shifting it more to a bucket position - high at the front of the seat but low at the rear. This fixed the discomfort for me almost immediately.

nice but over budget.
Agreed but with the market as it is a compromise maybe possible. They can at worse turn down an offer but they know a serious buyer exists.
If I had an 80k budget I would be tempted with this car to try and get a deal. At 3k miles it is like a new car and it has all the right options. They don't come much better.

Yep definitely worth a go at £80K. It is very badly presented though in my opinion.
Thanks for these. He has now decided he wants a car from the network so I will I’ll focus the search there.
A GTS is the car to get I think. Thanks for the suggestions.

How does a car in the network differ (comfort blanket wise) than, say a JZM car with full Porsche service history and continuing Porsche warranty? Whats the difference? newer magazines?

I don’t know mate, it’s his choice. Don’t shoot the messenger.
fair enough, was genuinely curious as maybe there is indeed some factor between the two scenarios. Good luck with his search - plenty of options out there but nothing presently special, GTS wise, like that PTS Green one earlier in the thread.

I understood that the Porsche warranty wasn’t transferred if it was a trade sale?
Maxus said:

Correct for a trade sale, but could be sold under SOR where warranty can be transferred from current to new owner.

Depending on the OPC and a potential issue, you'll probably have more 'good will' if you purchase from an OPC for something thats not covered in a warranty.
Also generally speaking an OPC will on take cars on that are non-smoking, fill P history, known history. Whereas backyard dealers will sell any old sh*t.
Likes of some of the Porsche specialist are probably somewhere inbetween.
IMHO.

Hi all, sorry for the thread resurrection, but I find myself in the same position as the OP. Ive read the whole thread which is a great help.
This is my first 911, so taking it slowly, same budget.
I'm looking at 992.1, personally I like the look and the interior makes a difference too. PDK is a must.
I've been advised to go C4S or C4GTS, I want a daily driver and told the '4' will allow my to drive it all year (scotland based)
80k seems to get a 992.1 C4S
Am I heading on the right path regarding the '4' and also suitable daily?
IMO you don’t need a 4 to be able to daily a 911, you’ll probably have more options if you include a 2 in your search and if you intend to run it all year round just treat yourself to a set of winter tyres / wheels.
I would add that, for a daily you won’t go far wrong with a nicely spec’d C2 or C4

If you are a director of a company also try Lombard. they are at 8.5% on HP and 9.9% on PCP on a car at 60k as I am looking at this for an Emira.

Pretty sure this is my old car , cracking car and warranty until 2025! That manual box was a dream. If it’s got ppf (weird not to mention it in the advert) then definitely mine
Longtime lurker, but haven't posted in a while!
I'm thinking of taking the plunge around the 80K range. When I saw this 991.2 GTS today which ticks the boxes but it looks like it's been on the market for a while (May 2024, according to MotorWatch), anything I should be concerned about?
