Spent a lot of time googling, the gearbox 5h19 is the same as used on BMW e46 e39 etc from the era apart from driveshaft layout .

Whilst fiddling with an obd reader I got a 0740 code , tip lock up. Never noticed it has stopped working as I only do short trips 10 miles each way, but yes it will work a little for the first couple of miles then stop. Spent a lot of time googling, the gearbox 5h19 is the same as used on BMW e46 e39 etc from the era apart from driveshaft layout . So there is a lot of info about it. So its either low oil level, defective solenoid no4 or tc seal . So topped up the oil, ( dont do this unless the car is running as I found it dumps a couple of litres out the plug!). sat with a thermocouple in the oil till it got warm then put plug back in. No better. Solenoids are £200 plus, so picked up a used set from ebay, checked the resistance, 6.8 ohms, and operation, all good. Spent a day underneath the car getting covered in smelly trans oil swapped over solenoid. The old one seemed ok, correct resistance and operated ok. Test run, exactly the same :x . so wasted a day, lots of new expensive oil and a solenoid for nothing, so its the tc seal. So a decent repair is 1k labour + 1k for tc plus may as well get gearbox overhauled another 1- 2k... :frustrated: Wife has banned spending any more on the old car. Judging from the bmw forums, this seems quite common often happens at 70k miles , which seems low. Bloody ZF gearboxes. You would have thought they would have ironed this out. Some of them have repaired it, some have run with it for years . I know ultimately it will cause excessive heat etc. I think if I used it for hours on the motorway it would be a problem, but nipping into Melton by the backroads etc on the supermarket run, dont think it will make much difference as I am never in the lockup zone. Anyway, thought I would share it in case anyone else lives with it.
