I realize much of this may be covered by different threads, but nonetheless it is confusing to me.
I would ultimately like a nav system and good sound with an Ipod hookup. This being said:
- Would it be better to go PCM 2.1 then add the Ipod adapter or get the base and plan on aftermarket? It seems many are not impressed with PCM, but I am confused as to how seemless an aftermarket would be.
- What are the thoughts on the Bose versus CD24? Many seem to be underwhelmed with the Bose (no surprise) and this upgrade would make aftermarket stereo a real problem.
Again, I know there is a lot of info on this. The real question is if I opt to not get the PCM or Bose could I ultimately get at least an equivalent level systems at a later date? i.e. if you wanted sport chronos you better get them now.
P.S. Test drove the car again...awesome! I was able to take it out by myself and I think I was smiling the whole time.
I'm very happy with the Bose system. Perhaps I just haven't heard better, but I'm not griping.
It is easy to imagine that a third party could build a better Nav system. The Dension 500 is a great unit, but it is essentially a glorified hack and is limited by the PCM.
I have no info/opinions on whether a third party option would be a better idea as I am leasing my vehicle and that level of modification doesn't make sense for me.
I have the Bose system which includes the CDR24 head unit. It sounds good, but my custom Alpine - Infinity system I assembled and installed in my Mazda sounds wayyyyy better. I think the problem with OEM stereo systems is the cheap speakers they use. If I were to change anything it would be to replace the current speakers.
I just got done installing the Dension (simple procedure) and will be taking it to the dealer to activate the CDC so I can start using the iPod. No more fiddling with CDs every 40 minutes. We had a similar unit installed on our BMW and it is well worth it to be able to control the iPod from the head unit. A lot of so called "iPod capable" head units will only connect through the head phone jack meaning you have to control the whole mess using the iPod click-wheel which is just as unsafe as fumbling with a CD. With the Dension you get the added bonus of being able to hide your iPod in the glove box or similar location and still use it. I also don't like installing an aftermarket headunit which usually riuns the well designed appearance of the stock dash and looks out of place.
I can't comment about the PCM but I have heard alot of discouraging remarks about the Porsche NAV system. I'll probably end up getting a small portable unit like a Tom Tom to tell me where to go.
After reading some more, I think I will chose to go with the stock CDR-24 and no bose system.
It seems that there are better aftermarket options and I suspect there will be even better options in the future. I probably wont upgrade for another 6-12 months since I still have to order the car in the first place.
