Suspected cause
The reason the Targa top "the targa top is moving slowly with some minimal binding" isn't working correctly, is more than likely the whole rear structure is tweaked/twisted.
Leading evidence: 'whole rear structure is tweaked/twisted' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'whole rear structure is tweaked/twisted' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Clean inside (though not great)' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suggestion
A rebuilt version of the same car with 2.X times the miles isn't worth $30k, but the buyer needs to realize that; retail would likely set near there for a clean title.

Suggestion
I don't think an offer of 57% of the asking is going to get there because of the seller's mindset when setting the price, but I think you're fair in the assessment of what it's worth at 17-20.

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi! I made the mistake of perusing classifieds and came across a clean looking 2004 C2 Targa with a rebuilt title. Some quick googling shows me that
this is the damage
. The owner is asking $30K.
Normally I would have scrolled right past, the last thing I need is another 911, but I've been wanting to find a car that might be appropriate to send to Slakker and I've never owned a Targa, so figured I'd check it out. I'm no mechanic but the car is
pretty
clean inside (though not great). The main damage was to the passenger side front and rear panels and rear bumper, and all were replaced. The wheels have been swapped out. Everything seems operational, but the rear suspension is one-finger on the driver's side and two on the passenger's side. Heard a little scraping on a speed bump in a test drive, and the targa top is moving slowly with some minimal binding. In conjunction with a little shadiness on the part of the seller (he claimed he's been driving it for 6 months, but there's only ~120 miles on it since the mileage in the accident pictures), makes me wonder about the quality of the rebuild. He's Russian and speaks very poor English, which has made it difficult to get additional information.
All that said, I'm trying to think about, more generally, how to value a rebuilt title. Assuming the car was in "like pre-wreck condition", what would be an appropriate discount? In the case where I'm finding some obvious issues, obviously I'd take that off an offer. My gut reaction is to offer $17K for this car, figuring ~$30K for a clean title version, less ~1/3 for the rebuilt title, and then a few $K for the work that will need to be done. If I decide to move forward, obviously I'll get a PPI.
I guess I'm just wondering how others have thought about a purchase with a rebuilt title. FWIW I'm also working with a local dealer who specializes in rebuilds, looking for an inexpensive Turbo or GT3 for track, but that process, at least so far, seems a little less sketchy.
Aside from trying to sell a rebuilt title car, which we all know isn't easy, how long has it been for sale? FWIW, and I'm kicking myself here, in late January I passed on a wholesale 2004 Targa with 37k miles for $35 that was mint, had recent documented clutch/IMS/RMS/AOS; yes, that was foolish, but shows where the wholesale market was, so that was a $39/40k car retail. A rebuilt version of the same car with 2.X times the miles isn't worth $30k, but the buyer needs to realize that; retail would likely set near there for a clean title. They're likely caught up in the auction buzz. I don't think an offer of 57% of the asking is going to get there because of the seller's mindset when setting the price, but I think you're fair in the assessment of what it's worth at 17-20.
Thanks for the thoughts and the reality check! Yeah I've been seeing auctions closing anywhere from $25 - $30 for pretty well sorted high mileage cars, $30 - $35 after fees/transport. After putting about $15K in the pockets of transport companies over the last year I really like the notion of buying local, but need to resist an impulse purchase just because Targa...
The language barrier made it tough to tell how much the seller was willing to budge. He seemed to know that $30K was too high, but yeah $17K will probably feel like a big haircut to him. My impression is the wrecked car sold for $10K or so. Probably best to let this one go.
Forget about it... The last thing you want is more severe problems on a 25 year old car that already has enough problems when the structure body is in perfect conditions....
A Targa 996 is a beautiful car no doubt, just not this one....
The reason the Targa top "the targa top is moving slowly with some minimal binding" isn't working correctly, is more than likely the whole rear structure is tweaked/twisted. Same probably for the "Heard a little scraping" and the "rear suspension is one-finger on the driver's side and two on the passenger's side"
You can find a nice never crashed 996 if you're patient and spend the cash to get a good one. Worth the wait imho...
Wise, and thank you. It is certainly true that nothing sours the ownership experience more than dealing with endless little problems and then some major ones.
