A later, (2003ish) C4S with the same credentials, but probably with slightly less mileage and fitted with the sports exhaust system.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

15 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi - This is my first post (except for the one in the newbie forum), and Ive done a search but can't seem to find the post I'm looking for. So.... i want to buy my next 996 but after owning a C2 and a C4 I want a little more noise and discomfort!! Id appreciate any views and/or advice on the follwing two choices: An early (2000) 996TT, approx 50-60K mileage, full history with extended warranties throughout, or..... A later, (2003ish) C4S with the same credentials, but probably with slightly less mileage and fitted with the sports exhaust system. I want to choose between the two as the prices are very similar. Any advice, greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

POST 2Original post

If you want noise don't go for the turbo unless you are going to spend £2 -3k on an aftermarket exhaust system. If you want discomfort and noise then don't go for either of these get a GT3 instead.

POST 5Original post

I know this is a cop out but really go for either - on personal preference. Both are superb cars. I personally would prefer a new lower mileage car but that said the Turbo shouldn't depreciate much more.

POST 6Original post

I think the turbo and GT3 are the most reliable 996 and although I may be wrong they are more reliable than the 996 C4S. I have a 996 turbo and it is the most reliable car I ever had. The noise of the 996 turbo is a bit disappointing though except if an aftermarket exhaust is installed. Another factor to take into account is that even the early 996 turbo have a fantastic equipment, I do not know how the equipement of the 996 turbo compares with the equipment of the 996 C4S.

POST 7Original post

Hi, The 996 C4S has the same suspension and brakes as the 996 Turbo. From and interior perspective the C4S has the upgraded better sound system as stock but this is not the Bose option. The carbon/aluminium PCM etc are extras for both. Overall I would experience both and make a decision. The C4S does however sound the dogs dangles. Alan

POST 8Original post

I had the same dilema,,, opted for a turbo, then found the X50 .....FANTASTIC Dan

POST 9Original post

I wanted a C4S, but then i drove a turbo!! Got to say though, the C4S with PSR sounds awesome!!!! Turbo all the way. :thumb:

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for all the replies however Im still confused. I think I'll test drive both and make a decision, although reading a little more, am I right in saying the early 996 TT had the hand built engine? Would this make it more reliable or just more substantially expensive for parts? Also, as a bonus, cheaper car tax as of next year!

POST 11Original post

In terms of maintenance costs 996tt and 996C4S are pretty much the same, 996tt though is more reliable and it is another driving experience

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Ok - Ive looked at a couple C4s cars but still need to look at a TT. My nearest one is 3 hours away, but before I go could anyone tell me what the external differences are with the pre-face lift TT models or is it more internal differences i.e. glove box!

POST 13Original post

differences are internal, glove box and many items, like Bose, i think were std on the facelift turbo. I did hear of a chassis tweak? not sure about that, I would suggest a search of here or renntech.org

POST 14Original post

996 TT and GT3 have engines derived from the 911 GT1 Le Mans winner. They dont suffer the same issues as standard 996 engines, RMS etc and have a better reputation for reliability Regards facelift. 2002 Model year cars have glovebox, Bose etc as standard. Trouble is all facelift cars will be in the higher tax bracket I believe. You need an early 2000 car to avoid the new tax band And the choice between a C4S and a TT C4S looks pretty and sounds good with PSE but Turbo is in an entirely different league performance wise. There really is no comparison

POST 15Original post

Quigs what area do you live in...dont be too specific ..this is an open forum  .. as myself or another tt owner could let you sample the delights Dan
