Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Question: Is it likely that a bad AOS could cause enough vacuum to repeatady crack the plastic oil fill downspout?
Leading evidence: 'Fill downspout' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Thought noise might be exhaust but indy determined my oil fill downspout was cracked.

There is also a DIY there on how to replace the unit:

I wont say its "easy" to replace while you are in there...
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Had an issue last spring with a small oil leak. Also a mist of oil on rear bumper, at the same time had a harmonic vibration from noise from engine at about 45 mph. Thought noise might be exhaust but indy determined my oil fill downspout was cracked. New oil fill downspout installed, sound disappeared and oil leak stopped. 1500 miles later sound is back oil mist on bumper back and small drips under engine.
Question: Is it likely that a bad AOS could cause enough vacuum to repeatady crack the plastic oil fill downspout?
Thanks in advance.
On another post I read that a good test for a bad AOS is to pull oil cap off while at idle. If the engine runs smoothly then good AOS, if the engine dies bad AOS. Is this a valid test? Mine dies so this and my other symptoms lead me to believe it's a valid test and I certainly have a bad AOS. Where can I get the best deal on one online? How much can i expect to spend? With all the info and help of this forum I'm planning on tackling the replacement on my own.
Thanks in advance.
the AOS is in plain sight when the transmission is out... I wont say its "easy" to replace while you are in there... but much much easier than other times. They run about $100-150 for the parts and since the car is older, if it has not been replaced.... it WILL FAIL sooner or later. They have internals that just degrade over time... its good insurance.
not ALL AOS symptoms are the white smoke. Sometimes they cause crankcase pressure to be high or low, and a vaccumm leak, oil seapage, water drips... there are several cases...
The bellows comes with the new AOS, use the stock clamp (BIATCH to install!!) but it wont cut the bellows like a worm clamp will....
Above cut from another Ivangene post. Think this is my answer. Of course any other thought or insights are appreciated. Thanks Ivangene!
If you want to see if your AOS is bad you can test your crank case vacuum. For just a little bit of money you can build a simple slacktube manometer.
This will take the confusion/mystery out of whether your oil fill cap is too difficult to remove/etc.
