In short: remove the trim around it (2 halves that come off easily) and then slide the mirror off the mount towards the front of the car (used a small wooden stick and rubber hammer to gently tap it forward).

Then I had to do the same for the porsche mirror, and use the pins / connector from that one on the 607 mirror.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

1 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

2 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

My 996 came with the self dimming interior mirror. It had failed, there was a 'fluid' spot in the middle: The dimming didn't work and the mirror had a slight 'see double' effect. It worked, but annoyed me. Now you can buy a new mirror from porsche for 'only' 750 euros, which is a bit steep. (rather save that money for an Uaos ) 2nd hand they're also still very expensive. So I got searching. The mirror is a donnelly mirror that is widely used in cars from that era, jaguars, range rovers... And the Peugeot 607. The former do not command the porsche premium, but have their own variation of that, the Peugeot, not so much; i was able to source a 2nd hand one from a 2007 607 for 55 euros including shipping. The catch is it's not plug and play, the mirror is identical, but the 'foot' and connector are not. So I removed the foot of the 607 mirror and removed the pins from the connector, end up with something like this: Then I had to do the same for the porsche mirror, and use the pins / connector from that one on the 607 mirror. Putting the connector on takes a bit of fiddling, but is very doable with a bit of patience. Pry them off the porsche wires and then clamp them on the 607 wiring, colors are the same and the pins kind of 'eat' into the wires so you don't have to solder. After that put it in the car and enjoy a working mirror Hope this helps some of you restore your mirrors to their former glory, while preserving money for proper updates P. S. I didn't explain how to move the mirror from the windscreen of the 996. In short: remove the trim around it (2 halves that come off easily) and then slide the mirror off the mount towards the front of the car (used a small wooden stick and rubber hammer to gently tap it forward).
