Looking to upgrade 09 6MT CS steering wheel, will this fit?

My car as stated is a 2009 6MT CS w the thin triangular airbag wheel. I found a listing for the SD wheel w p/n 991-347-803-35 and can’t quite figure out if it will fit. I’m sure the Cayman R has the same type wheel and since they’re both Gen 2s, assume it will be plug and play. Can anyone help me out? I saw a guy here back then install a Gen 2 sport design steering wheel on a Gen 1 and required some coding to tell the ECU that it’s a multifunction wheel at the dealer to make the horn work. I’m just not sure what to do w a Gen2 in this case.

Does anyone know if I can install a sport design steering wheel on a 2009 CS? I looked high and low and there seem to be no clear answer. My apologies if it’s been addressed already before.

You mean like this one? 2009 Boxster/PDK. It's a PDK wheel, nothing was needed to make it work. It took the original airbag. I don't see why it would be any different on a Cayman S. And probably easier to find if you don't need the flappy-paddles for PDK (which is why I installed it, aside from it looking MUCH better than the one that came on the car )

The previous owner of my base 2011 987.2 replaced the stock steering wheel with a Sport Design wheel, so I know it can be done. Mine has PDK paddles, FWIW. It also has the Sport Chrono software installed and the lights on the steering wheel function as intended.

Thanks for the reply. I know w the 2010-onwards this was easier. Especially for the ones w PDK. My question is specifically for a 2009, which is the first iteration of the Gen2. When I go Suncoast, the sport design wheel isn’t even listed as being compatible w my 6MT car. The SD wheel I’m planning to use is for a manual car too, no buttons no nothing. The only big difference is the airbag (triangular to round). I’ve researched and saw that “May be possible” but that there might be some coding required for the horn to work. I wanted to see if anyone w a 2009 who’s done it can she’s some more light on this. I don’t think it’s ever been done. Or at least not documented here.

Checked here, checked there.. no sign of it although I know I wrote it up. I suspect it may be lurking under "What did I do to my 987 today" somewhere. Right now - no ambition to chase it down. Mebbe later.. There is an important point with installing the airbag in these wheels, and it has to do with the cable routing.

Oh that’s too bad! I guess as long as the triangular and round (991) airbags have the same wiring inside the steering wheel, it should fit compatibly, am I correct to assume this? i wish there was a stickied post about this in the past but alas, I guess it’s not as commonot occurring or maybe not as popular. Who knows?

I had a 2009 Cayman S with the triangle wheel thing and replaced it with a round airbag type of wheel. I didn't like the feel of the thinner wheel with the triangle airbag. I did have to visit the dealer and have them change the wheel type to "mult-function" in a module somewhere. The horn wasn't working after I did the swap and needed to be re-coded and then it was fine.

This is exactly my question now - where and how to do this w the Foxwell NT530. How much did the dealer charge you for this? Care to share here or PM if you wish. Thank you all for the help so far!

I didn't know about Foxwell (did it exist back in 2012-2015)? The dealer charged me $130 in shop labor to do it. They didn't know what to do, but I told them that the internet said to change the wheel type to multi-function wheel, even though the wheel I used didn't have any buttons on it other than the horn. They said they would try it and then the horn started working again. I don't have my car any more. Sadly, I had to sell it to put new siding on the house.

Looks like this is direction I’m headed since our situation is identical. I’m not sure how long the Foxwell tool has been around, probably fairly recent. And at this point, a 2009 car is considered very old, 12 years old! I hope someone can chime in to see if it will work so I don’t have to setup an appt with a dealer. Sorry to hear to had to give it up. Homeownership is a boon and a bane for sure.

Following this with interest. @deilenberger I am in the market for the SD wheel as have the same as you had and would like the SD instead. My car is a manual 09 so my hope is that it's fairly easy. You don't happen to know if that one from the flea market is still available? The prices from Suncoast or Design911 here in the UK are too much. Thanks
