Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

40 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi everyone, Does anyone know if fabspeed or any other aftermarket high flow is carb certified? Ny adopted the same stupid law as CA...

POST 2Original post

looks like YES for 993: https://rennlist.com/forums/993-foru...-approval.html but NO for 996: http://www.fabspeed.com/porsche-996-...rt-cat-x-pipe/

POST 3Original post

Read this extremely recent thread: https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...nt-thread.html Good luck.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 11682621

I read that thread a few minutes ago and won't be buying from them! Lol. Does anyone know if anyone has any info on any ca legal cats that are now legal in ny. Or would I have to do the yearly switch for inspections? That's kind of ridiculous

POST 5Original post

Quotes source post: 11682612

I'm not sure where you get "yes" for the 993 out of that thread - but it's a NO. Nothing but stock will pass a CA smog check (meaning visual, functional and emissions sections of the tests).

POST 6Original post

No carb sticker on Fabspeed cats. "You may pass emissions testing" is definitely not the same as "you will pass visual inspection." Sorry, Nexus, wish the answer was better.

POST 7Original post

Quotes source post: 11682846

Not true, a CARB approved replacement cat will be legal. The thing I've found about getting my 4 often highly modified Porsches smogged here in SoCal during the last 20 years is that not one tech has got on his hands and knees to see what the exhaust system is. Its always plug and play with a glance in the engine bay. One trick to passing the emissions test is to have that car hot and bothered before the test. Ream it out good to get the aftermarket cats hot and make sure it is tested while hot as apposed to cold. A cold start on aftermarket cats may fail as they often take longer to heat up therefor failing the cycle time.

POST 8Original post

Quotes source post: 11686456

This was ALWAYS true for me until I was "selected" to got to a "Star station" this year. There were flashlights, kneepads, mirrors on sticks. I definitely do not approve.

POST 9Original post

This will allow you to search for CARB approved cats for your Porsche. https://ssl.arb.ca.gov/PartsSearchTo...earchTool.aspx Note; I do not endorse, or support any part of the search process, nor do I own or operate or smog any cars in CA. YMMV, don't blame me if it doesn't work. I found three mfg that have a CARB approval for various years.

POST 10Original post

Quotes source post: 11686456

Ok, if what I said is not true, please tell us which replacement catalytic converter is currently available that is CARB legal? Of course, in theory, a CARB certified "anything" is legal...

POST 11Original post

Don't waste your time, guys. I'm not aware of ANY for Mk I 996s. For MkII 996s, the ONLY carb certified cats are these (red text) http://www.discountconverter.com/dir...&CylSelected=6

POST 12Original post

Quotes source post: 11686724

Thanks for posting that... $4,000 for new cats... ouch. (I see the retail price is just over $500/side...)

POST 13Original post

Quotes source post: 11686732

I hear you. Not that it helps a lot an OE cat is ~$1,700 EACH available from Sunset Porsche. Would be nice if someone has installed those carb approved cats could chime in for their experience. I've asked a while ago but got no response from this forum.

POST 14Original post

Quotes source post: 11686738

And if you read the actual executive orders, the CARB compliance can be revoked for numerous reasons. I wonder if that means if you spend your money on so-called CARB complaint cats, and they lose compliance because they stop doing their quarterly monitoring and semiannual reporting or whatever, you then need factory ones anyhow because your product no longer has a valid certification! Uggh...

Look like universal cats...would love to see someone welding one on his/her 996 LOL

POST 17Original post

Quotes source post: 11686839

That catalytic converter is spec'ed to fit the 1.3L engine of a Geo Metro, too!!! Go for it... let's see how well the 996 runs with that installed!!

POST 18Original post

Quotes source posts: 11686724, 11686851

I guess there's a lot you aren't aware of. Have you done all the exhaust flow measurements? Do you know what the spec is from Porsche for the OEM? Do you know how it compares to the magnaflow? Yeah - thought so.

POST 19Original post

Quotes source post: 11686861

Thanks for asking so kindly. Nope, I have not done such testing. All I've done is read the link you posted which would concern me putting on a universal cat that is applicable to a Geo Metro. I assume from your comment that you have this information to enlighten us? I always enjoy learning stuff.

POST 20Original post

docmirror, not clear from your post whether you found something or you're recommending it. By all means share with us if you have good experience with those universal cats and recommend them.

POST 21Original post

Quotes source post: 11686724

So, $350 per side sounds pretty tempting. I see on the CARB site that Valina is the only company authorized to manufacture aftermarket cats for the 996.

POST 22Original post

Doing a quick search it appears Magnaflow, Discountconverters and Valina are all tied in to Valina as the manufacturer although the Magnaflow converter seems to be a generic offering. Paul

POST 23Original post

Quotes source post: 11687065

Actually the carb approved ones are $500+ each but still sounds quite attractive. Note only the last two rows in that table are carb approved.

POST 24Original post

The Valina ones are generic 2.25" inlet/outlet, 4" diameter in 8", 9" and 12" lengths. They require cutting and welding and need the mid-cat O2 sensor to be installed somewhere else. $250 each. There's no info about the cat density or cell size that would affect flow characteristics... but maybe docmirror has that information for us.

POST 25Original post

Get the ones like Ahsai did from Carnewal and call it a day. Don't really know why you guys are exerting so much effort on this. Oh, I know, because Rennlist...

POST 26Original post

I have the fabspeed cats... but I don't think they're certified.

POST 27Original post

Quotes source post: 11687383

Yeah. I'm not sure that they are.

POST 28Original post

I should be manufacturing cert stickers instead of prototype vehicles

POST 29Original post

Oops, looks like they are stamped into the metal on converters.

POST 30 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 11685766

Thanks! I find it ridiculous that there's a visual inspection when you are actually passing the emission standards! They don't use the sniffer on obdii cars in ny.

POST 31 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 11686724

Thanks for posting this. $1000 for stock garbage that doesn't even work as well as aftermarket. Ridiculous. Only good thing is that cars 1993 or earlier are exempt from this stuff in ny.

POST 32 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 11687375

They changed he law in ny so that only carb approved cats can be used. After looking at carnewal, that might be an option! Do you have to send it all the way to Europe? Or is there an American distributor?

POST 33Original post

Quotes source post: 11688071

All the way to Belgium. Cost me ~$1200 shipping included (~$160 to ship both cats to them) I have not gone through any smog test yet with them but I hope they will pass the pipe test. Will update my thread next yr when the time comes. Appearance wise they are identical to stock.

POST 34Original post

Quotes source post: 11688139

That's because you know the outer shell or skin is stock.

POST 35 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 11688139

Great! Thanks! As long as they look stock, they'll pass the visual.

POST 36Original post

Quotes source post: 11688045

Agree. If it's pollution they're worried about, then it shouldn't matter what's on the car, just what's coming out of it.

The lobbyist have to get paid to push for various laws in the great country we live in. Then there are the kickbacks... Unfortunately none of these people are enthusiasts of cars, only money.

POST 38 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 11688906

Some probably are car enthusiast but they get their stuff under the table. For instance in ny you "need" to have a front plate. The nassau county executive was at a car show with his 71 corvette convertible with no plate. And he had two detectives as bodyguards. Double standard?? I think so.
