On the sanding, I used general purpose 200,400 & then 600 sandpaper.

I used some black satin paint that I picked up at Lowes or Home Depot.

Painted black it looks a lot like 996 Turbo from the front - that might be good or bad /fckeditor/editor/images/smiley/MWPX/teeth_smile.gif I was thinking about this mod, and my idea was to use black water colors and paint one side and compare - water colors should come of no problem and would allow a much better look in person ( unless you can find a car that had it done to compare with ) - I suspect you have your mind set on this mod, so we should expect pictures very soon - right /fckeditor/editor/images/smiley/MWPX/wink_smile.gif
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

for those of you....who like me...cant seem to just sit still and just enjoy your cayman without thinking of what to do to it next....i have these.....
two photos...a before, and a simulated after....
i think this may be my next mod...i think it cleans things up a bit, at least in the gaurds red...especially how the front chin spoiler now looks like part of the car. on the other hand...now that i look closer, it kind of matches the wheels....hmmmmm....my list of compulsions just keeps getting longer....../fckeditor/editor/images/smiley/MWPX/stupid.gif

RR - at this point, the only Guards Red I have to look at with any frequency is yours. Yer keeping me amused with all the mods or planned mods. Like you, I'm of two minds about the above pics. How about keep the red around the fogs, but paint the chin red too? ==RedEye
RedRocket,
I did the spears in black on my Carrera White and really like it. The dealer told me the car got a lot of attention today after the clear bra was installed. BTW, would you use a flat black or clear coated? I had mine done in flat black to match the rest of the trim. The mod makes the intakes look bigger.

ok redeye....here ya go....
before....
after.....
i cant decide......i still think i like the foglamps painted black....and Rudy...to answer your question....i have no idea. I think its more of a flat black isnt it? imo it would be best to match whatever color the vents already are...not color....i mean sheen i guess.
I like them blacked out. I am interested in getting it done on my arctic silver. I first saw it in the Techart ad with a silver Cayman and loved it. I agree it makes the intake look large
I blacked mine out on my artic silver and I have gotten many compliments on them. Used 200,400. & 600 grit sandpaper to knock the finish off and used a black satin multipourpose paint.
would you mind posting a pic of your front end? Also, did you happen to document the proceedings? I would love to see just how you removed the spears and the process of sanding and painting. I spoke with a shop about doing the job for me and it is gonna cost a couple hundred bucks i think. If its pretty straight forward it would be a great mod for the Articles section too!
I would love to post a pic, but Im not that technically savy. But, I can describe how I did it. First, its very easy and took me all of about 30 minutes from start to finish.
First, removal is pretty straigt foward. The spear and the black plastic piece just above it all come out together. I started on the underside and pulled outward on the spear by applying constant presure, not yanking it. The spear is held in by about 10 plastic tabs that go through slots on the bumper cover. Note, the outside tip of the spear rests inside the bumper cover so you do have to flex it out of there. The good news is these pieces are more like heavy duty vinyl than plastic and are pretty flexible.
Once removed, I then seperated the black plastic piece from the spear. They are joined by the same type of tabs as the spear is to the bumper cover. Note, they are not as sturdy though. I nearly ripped one clean off. So, be more gentle when seperating these two pieces.
On the sanding, I used general purpose 200,400 & then 600 sandpaper. I never got past the paint layer, just sanded off the clear coat. After I finished, I ran them under warm water for probably 5 minutes each to get all of the dust particles off.
When it came time to paint, I donned a pair of latex gloves to handle the spear with to insure that any dirt/dust/oil on my hands didnt affect the finish. I used some black satin paint that I picked up at Lowes or Home Depot.
I allowed them to dry for about 5 hours and then reassembled the spears with the plastic pieces and then reinstalled on the car.
Let me know if you have any questions.
Jason
Ive been to the power car wash several times since then and have had no problem with paint adhesion.
I know appearance is a matter of personal taste, but I'm amazed that Porsche design team thinks painted fog lights/spears is a better idea than if they are black. I thought the intention was to make the air intakes look extra large, which is accomplished much better when the whole space is black. I think the modification is a HUGE improvement. As for the FCS, I guess they are trying to make the nose look slimmer/lighter; but why not just shape it that way (instead of the hokey paint job on which they decided)? Overall, Cayman S is a phenomenally attractive design, but there are a lot of details (including bumpetettes and hideous circular dashboard vents) which just don't - in my opinion - harmonize with the rest of the car. I want one desperately, and hope to be able to afford the Cayman, when/if they ever bring it to market; but forcing me to go aftermarket to correct appearance 'flaws' is kind of a downer.

Hi all
Just to add my penneth - I am going to do the black spears, so I ordered a new pair of spears from Porsche (£49 each). They come unpainted, in bare black plastic. They do need painting for a nice finish, but you can install them unpainted to see if you like the look, and keeping the original body coloured ones means you can return to stock if desired.
Just got to make a bit of time to install them now !
Tony
Will do K-Man - but you'll have to be patient. The cayman has gone into storage, as I'm off to Thailand tomorrow for a couple of weeks holiday. I'll get onto the spears once I get back.
Tonse
Tonse, You'd best be careful in Thailand. The he-she's reportedly stalk drunken Brits staggering out of bars late at night. I've read it in various British motorcycle magazines. An error in judgement could be devastating. That is all.
I think the black spears look good on some colors. White looks real good painted black. My Lapis not so good (IMO).
Same w/the silver lip. I like (and get mucho comments) w/the silver lip on Lapis. However, for colors like Speed Yellow, the silver is out of step.
Good luck in any decision.
Any DIY instructions or clues as to how to remove the fog spears so i can either send them to bumperplugs or take them to my body shop to paint? This was the first thing i said i would do when i ordered it =)
Spear removal is actually covered in the owners manual. It spells out where to pul and the order. They dont tell you to be careful around where the spears meet the bumper cover. There are two thin tabs that you can easily rip out.

<p class="MsoNormal" style="MARGIN: 0cm 0cm 0pt">As Tonser has already said The standard part comes in 'matt black' at about 50.00GBP. I bought them and the backing plates(which you don’t need) fitted them, as they came, unpainted (cause I’m an impatient bas**d )with the intention of painting them later, then my friend bought a basalt black “S”. So I convinced him that my original silver ones would match his spoiler splitters and believe me they look really good. I’ve now got his shinny black ones fitted to my silver car.<o
