Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Thanks to this post I have just checked my XJS which has had EBC discs fitted to the front and yes you guessed it they are on the WRONG sides so I will now have to change them, I checked with EBC just to be sure and no choice.[

I have just replaced all four discs on my car, but am now worried by a remark in Adrian Streather's excellent book - 996 the essential companion - which indicates that these are handed, with right and left discs being marked as such.

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

13 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I have just replaced all four discs on my car, but am now worried by a remark in Adrian Streather's excellent book - 996 the essential companion - which indicates that these are handed, with right and left discs being marked as such. I am quite sure that mine were not marked. There is no indication in Rodney's link (technical forum) that handing is critical. Is it? Jon

POST 2Original post

Yes, it is important. The attached shows which way round they should be:

POST 3Original post

Hi Jon. I would've thought that it would be obvious if you put them on the wrong way 'round as the "flow" of the ventilation holes would be going backwards - as you turn the wheel forward...? (Or am I being thick...?) Adrian.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks, Richard & Adrian. They're on correctly! Jon

POST 5Original post

Thanks to this post I have just checked my XJS which has had EBC discs fitted to the front and yes you guessed it they are on the WRONG sides so I will now have to change them, I checked with EBC just to be sure and no choice.[ ]

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Oh my God! What have I started?...

POST 7Original post

If you've only done a couple of hundred miles, I wouldn't worry about the pads - they should be fine whichever way you put them back. I don't think I've ever seen 996 rear disks without cross-drilling. Are they 996 or Boxster disks?

POST 9Original post

...and here's my rear off-side: ...and here's my handle and here's my spout!

POST 10Original post

Now you mention it I can't see a pattern of the rear either. Either that or it's one of those patterns that you've got to stare at for a few hours before you can make it out! [ ]

POST 11Original post

Only the fronts are directional There are left and right handed parts so two different part numbers For the std C2 & C4 Left 996.351.405.01 Right 996.351.406.01 The rear only has a single part that fits both sides 996.352.401.04

POST 12Original post

It is important to get them turning in the right direction because they are internally vented. The 'vanes' turn with the wheel and scoop air into the disks to help cool them down. If they are turning the wrong way the air will not be able to enter the vanes and so will not be able to help cool the disks down.

POST 13Original post

Yes ... but the brakes will work really well when you're reversing
