Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Leading evidence: 'Check fuse' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check fuse' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

It surprises you even more when you've popped the lid and are cleaning the engine bay

I reckon it is the engine compartment fan that is the problem as I can hear the rad fans go to 'Stage Two', which means that the engine compartment fan should be running (water temp > 105 degrees).

Oh well, back to the drawing board - any ideas why it is suddenly running about 10 degrees hotter all of a sudden?

Think I've found the cause of my slightly high running temperature on my C4 - Radiator fans cutting in more often than ever before so I got out and checked and the engine compartment fan is not turning.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Checked the fuse and that seems OK... Anyone know if this is as simple as fitting a new fan, or is it more likely to be a switching issue or sensor or something?
Just for info, the fan doesn't come on until the engine bay temperature is greater than 80 degrees C, or the water temperature above 102 degrees C.
The warning light on the temperature gauge should flash at 0.5Hz (once every two seconds) if the fan isn't working.
damn - thought I'd found an easy fix there!
So radiator fans come on before engine compartment then?
Oh well, back to the drawing board - any ideas why it is suddenly running about 10 degrees hotter all of a sudden? No flashing lights, coolant level fine, rads both hot and not blocked, rad fans both working, not using any oil, and rad fans cutting in and out as they should (so not thermostat I suspect).
Rad fans come on when you have the aircon switched on, so it could be a much lower temperature. You should be able to view this post if you are Watty on PCGB:

Do both the fans run at low and high speed? At low speed you can barely hear them inside the car with the engine running, but at high speed there is no mistake they are running. The low speed is controlled by a ballast resistor on each fan, and they are prone to blowing. I found that both of mine were gone.
It might also be the thermostat not opening fully.
That's me!
read it, but still doesn't explain what's happening... I reckon it is the engine compartment fan that is the problem as I can hear the rad fans go to 'Stage Two', which means that the engine compartment fan should be running (water temp > 105 degrees). But no lights at all?
Also, the temp drops at high speed (i.e. more air-flow through engine compartment?)
PS. I have a GT3 aerokit with rear spoiler - don't know if that makes a difference?
Wattie, Mine sits at 85 till in traffic then hits 95.. I have never heard the fan in the engine bay come on ?
May not help, but thought I would share !
Maybe it would be worth testing the fan by disconnecting it and putting 12v on it direct from a separate supply. (Spare battery or battery charger?)
I suspect that it is more air going through the front rads at higher speed that is keeping the temperature down.
I'm not sure I ever heard the engine compartment fan on my C2. It comes on a lot on the Turbo, and it took me by surprise when it first came on in the garage.
