Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

6 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi all. Its been a few weeks now since we picked up our 996, and its been fantastic (apart from a very slow puncture to the rear tyre) In the last few days however I have noticed that the aircon is making a weird noise. Switch the aircon on and the noise resembles a worn bearing type of whine. Switch it off and the car sounds smooth and quite. I think it could be the compressor but has anyone got any opinions?

POST 2Original post

could be the belt from the description, they've been known to cause a whine.

POST 3Original post

Sounds like the compressor. Try having a regass done - this requires a quantity of oil to be added. Might quieten it. Otherwise you'll need a new compressor (assuming it is the culprit of the noise).

POST 4Original post

Might sound like a stupid question but is the aircon still cooling the air? A lack of gas (I.E a leak) can make the compressor whine, as can an actual fault with the compressor and as above post, the belt.

POST 5Original post

Had exactly the same with my GT3. As the car came from an OPC, they replaced a rad & did a regas. Noise is still there on occasions so it will be going in for a new compressor next month; the A/C works fine but I know that it will pack up eventually if left. Was told it's a common problem if the gas & oil are allowed to completely leak out and the A/C is run with no oil.

POST 6Original post

If its not cooling it is highly likely to be one or both condensers which can be seen through the vents in the front bumper. A tell tale sign is an oil stain on the condenser. You can buy the Behr OEM (same as OPC) via the internet, just google the Porsche part number and a number of supplier optins will be found. Kwikfit do a regas for about£50. Good luck!
