I have seen a warranty from a non Porsche dealer which covers cars over 10 years old, with a max £4k payout which sounds ok, although I'd still be paying out if I needed to replace an engine.

Any answers or experiances would be great, I'm keen to get a 996 but would struggle to afford the 7-10k if I had to replace the engine in the unlikely event?

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi, Just looking into getting a 996, now having done a little research, I know there is a very small percentage of engine problems. I'm being careful here not to open a can of worms or over exaggerate the engine and or RMS issues. However people have said the best bet is to get a Porsche warranty and your covered. This sounds good, although I hear its only for cars 9 years or newer, as I'm looking at a 1998-2000 model, Im on or past the line. So basically: a) If I buy a car which is say 8 1/2 years old can I get a full years warranty or is it just 6 months b) If I buy a car over 9 years old is there a warranty from Porsche or from elsewhere that will cover me for the worst, ie engine dramas. c) Lastly I've heard different figures, from £725 to £899, any one got the latest on the price for a years warranty? Any answers or experiances would be great, I'm keen to get a 996 but would struggle to afford the 7-10k if I had to replace the engine in the unlikely event? Tom

POST 2Original post

Not an expert but: You can get the warranty up until the cars 9th birthday, meaning if you renew before it's 9th bday it will last till 10 years old. a) I think you can only buy in year lots, so 8 1/2 till 9 1/2 b) Try looking at Hartech, believe them to offer the best aftermarket warranty BUT the car must be serviced/ maintained by them IIRC and they're in Warrington. c) I paid £895 after having any warranty work carried out and the 111 points check. They won't slap a warranty on teh car if any current parts would fail the warranty check, mine was the alarm siren faulty which needed replacing at my cost (<£200) Which ironically is the one part right now which keeps failing and causing me no end of grief! Hope that helps, try doing a search on here though, there's loads of info available to you :thumb:

warranty Thanks for your replies, all good info. I have seen a warranty from a non Porsche dealer which covers cars over 10 years old, with a max £4k payout which sounds ok, although I'd still be paying out if I needed to replace an engine. I've also heard talk of the Porsche warranty not paying out on certain faults claiming they were 'fair wear and tear', so maybe a non Porsche warranty isn't a bad thing.

POST 5Original post

You'd get that wear and tear clause with all warranties. No warranty company is going to pay out for dics, pads, suspension bushes, etc etc... If you're going for a warranty on a car les than 10years it's a no brainer, Porsche warranty every time.

POST 6Original post

Re: warranty I know a good few people with older 996's but have yet to come across one with these problems. There obviously was some issues with RMS etc but with a good PPI check and service history, mileage taken into consideration you should be able to reduce the risk. With any old car you never know what will go wrong. Paying £900 a year for a warranty that only pays out £4000 max will put you out of pocket in 5 years if you have a good car. Maybe better to put that amount aside and when your paranoia wears off you can go mad spending the money on all those upgrades everyone talks about on here :thumb: TB
