Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.

0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.

Suggestion

The pedal not returning may not be anything to do with the release bearing (although the noise maybe): They do that when the clutch is on its way out as the self-adjusting hydraulics struggle to cope with the extra piston travel.

I don't have personal experience of replacing the dual mass flywheel but I have been told that it is worth replacing the flywheel with every second clutch change.

Suggestion

To test your clutch, boot it from about 4,000 rpm in 3rd gear (preferably uphill) and it will really obviously slip if it's worn.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

High guys its that time it seems the release bearing on my clutch is going. Clutch is making a loudish noise when dipped and the clutch peddal is sticking at the bottom then jumps up. The clutch engages fine but i have noticed a the occassional slip. So I guess it needs to be done but how do I know if the flywheel needs doing and whether the garage will take me for a ride. I have heard that the rear main seal should also be done with the clutch, is this correct. I Would appreciate any advice My car is 996 C2 cab on 2002 52 plate, 74k.

POST 2Original post

Definitely have a new RMS with a clutch change. It may be OK, but if it fails in 6 months time, you'll kick yourself... The pedal not returning may not be anything to do with the release bearing (although the noise maybe): They do that when the clutch is on its way out as the self-adjusting hydraulics struggle to cope with the extra piston travel. To test your clutch, boot it from about 4,000 rpm in 3rd gear (preferably uphill) and it will really obviously slip if it's worn. Forgot to answer the main question... flywheel may need to be skimmed if you've worn the clutch right down to the rivets, but I wouldn't expect it to need a new one. However, OPCs are notorious for changing things rather than skimming / repairing...
