Originally I came in looking at the 997 but having the opportunity to buy a Turbo for a little less money and with less miles made me take it for a test drive....

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

4 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi All, I'm new to this forum having been driving M cars for the last 10 years. Now I've been lucky enough to have done many miles in the mid to late 90's using my friends 993 Turbo 4 (12k Miles) and 996 C2S Cab (8k miles) and so I'm really past the 911 virgin thing. However the time has come where I've the opportunity to spend £40k on a second car and I'm sort of stuck between two choices, can you help?? I'm looking to at either a 2002 996 Turbo with around 20k miles on the clock and FPSH etc or a 2004 997 C2S with around 35k on the clock with all the right options. Originally I came in looking at the 997 but having the opportunity to buy a Turbo for a little less money and with less miles made me take it for a test drive.... WOW! Now I'd like your advice although both come with a twelve month warranty I'm curious about servicing costs, problems, what should I be looking for on either model? Is the Turbo being the older car going to a money pit? The Turbo is tipping the balance at the moment but is the speed thing over ruling what is a wonderful car with the C2S? :?: The more opinions the better please... For the record the cars I'm looking at have the following specifications:- 02 Turbo - Lapis Blue, Grey leather, sports memory seats, Bose, sun roof, CD, tracker 54 C2S - Black, Black leather, Sat Nav, phone, CD, Bose, sun roof, sports chrono, sports exhaust

POST 2Original post

Seeing as you've already experienced the grunt I think you'd be able to "utilise" the turbo far more enjoyably. Personally, Id go with the Turbo.... in saying that, haven't driven the turbo before (but driven 997, several models). Menu service costs are not far off (can be picked up from OPC website) then that or 996 but there are other pro/cons that you may need to weigh up - - service intervals (the 997 service intervals are now 2 years) - Depreciation (Which one is likely to depreciate faster?) - My guess would be on the 997. - Slight higher maintenance (not service) costs, being a 5+ year old car, it will needs parts that are changed per age (and not mileage). Again, next 911 I pick up will be a tt... after getting a taste of porkers, you always want more and more power :food: :thumb:

POST 3Original post

mate this question pops over all the time. if you do a search you see that few months ago I asked the same question and now Im the 996TT-converted-one. Honestly, the 997 is nice - beautifull design, refined, the latest looks etc. But the 996... the only thing you need is to drive it - once. You have some experience from the 993tt - think that the 996tt is much more refined, less laggy in terms of turbo. At current prices its a no brainer. For the price of a 997 you can get a GOOD 996tt X50. One thing though - buy on condition. Remember that 996's turbo were cars WAY past the 100k mark when new - if something goes wrong, it can be expensive. I bought a car that outside has a few swirls and marks but mecanically its perfect. Do the same. And now its a buyer market / so many to choose from. Happy hunting and hope to say welcome to the TT club soon ps > In the end I went with the 996tt and couldnt be happier.

POST 4Original post

I was in the same boat, i went for a x50, i will never look back, its great on fuel, its more than enough power, its lost most of its money and most of all the fun Go for the turbo.
