I upgraded my old CTEK to an MXS 5.0 around 5 years ago and the first one I had had couple of failures 18 month in where it drained the battery and I had to resurrect it using my old CTEK.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Duplicate pls delete My car gets driven perhaps once every few weeks. Between drives it gets left connected to a Ctek trickle charger. The lights on the Ctek are always all on by the time it comes to disconnect it and go for an enjoyable hour long blast. I decided to leave it connected all the time after leaving it just parked for a week normally, resulting in it needing a jump start. All had been going fine until several months later.... This week, I went to start the car as per usual, but the car just did a half of a turnover followed by loads of clicking. The Ctek was showing all the lights illuminated as per normal prior to me disconnecting it. Any idea why after religiously using the trickle charger this would happen ? I have now put a new battery in the car. Should I put the trickle charger back on all the time as per above with this new battery, or not agood idea for this new battery with a 5 year guarantee ?? Thanks for any good advice on how best to keep this new battery in good shape.

POST 2Original post

Your battery died by the sounds of it. Just carry on as you were, they are designed to be left on continuously. Done exactly the same for years and have had one battery just give up.

POST 3Original post

Me too... after yrs of good service being topped up by a trickle charger, my car's battery failed one morning, just before I left for a road trip. Similarly, lights on the charger showed all was well. New battery been fine.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks. I have put the trickle charger on.

POST 5Original post

I had exactly the same. One morning car wouldn't start, ticking noise etc..Ctek plugged in and all lit up. Changed battery and everything was fine. Got the battery checked by an independent and said nothing wrong with it. All very strange.

POST 7Original post

I upgraded my old CTEK to an MXS 5.0 around 5 years ago and the first one I had had couple of failures 18 month in where it drained the battery and I had to resurrect it using my old CTEK. CTEK replaced the MXS 5.0 and its been fine since. It had one more episode where it went into failure (red light on) mode, but I diagnosed this as a poor connection on the 12V CTEK extension cable (so may have been that all along). So I now regularly unplug/plug both ends of this and its been fine ever since. Note I had to use an extension cable as the 5.0 has a stupidly short cable compared to the original XS 3600. Previously with the XS3600 I was still having to replace the (standard) battery every 3-4 years. I switched to a Bosch AGM in 2017 and its still fine...

POST 8Original post

I've got loads of ctek chargers, but NOCO is way better quality. Thicker wires, better construction, more substantial clips and plugs. CTEK feels cheap.
